A career in English is very possible, Daniel!
The first steps are knowing what kind of English you want to pursuee: teaching, personal craft, research etc.
If you wish to go to college, I would say that’s the next step. There are wonderful English options where you are in New York, but there are also online options available as well. I go to Wichita State University, which has a Creative Writing major. Freelance positions are also available if you want to make some money and build your resume experience.
My English professor has this poster hung on her door that has a multitude of English professions beyond the degree. Many jobs are in categories of authorship, entertainment, education, journalism, publishing, law, counciling, usiness, politics, science and marketing/advertising.
