Hi David! It is great that you are thinking about your future and career options. I would start by thinking about your interests - what do you like to do in your free time away from school? You should also think about the subjects in school that you find interesting. You might even talk to a few teachers about the subjects they teach to help you understand more about those topics and where they are applied in everyday businesses.

Certainly, when looking at careers we need to think about what jobs are available... what are new jobs or tracks emerging in certain fields...what do these jobs pay, etc. However, keep in mind that the average person changes their career track several times in their life. It is ok to change your mind. Our interests change as we get exposed to new things, so give yourself some grace about being unsure.

Talk to the career center at your school. Do some research online about what majors are needed for different careers. For instance, STEM fields and degrees are a little more tightly linked than careers in Human Resources, for example. Attend career fairs your school might host.

Good luck!

Hello David, how's everything going? We appreciate you reaching out to us and we're eager to assist you in navigating your career path. It's excellent that Engineering is at the forefront of your mind. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most confident, how do you envision yourself thriving in an engineering role? Do you believe you have the necessary skills and passion? If your confidence level is between 7-10, it indicates you have a fairly clear vision of your future career.

Now, let's delve a bit deeper. What specific field of Engineering are you interested in pursuing in college? Engineering is a broad discipline encompassing areas like Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and more. It's crucial to identify which of these aligns best with your interests and skills.

When making this decision, consider your intellectual capacity, skills, interests, aptitude, values, and future aspirations. Remember, this choice will shape your future career and life, so it's important to be certain.

We encourage you to invest time in research, consult with your school's career counselor, and read up on the different engineering programs. This will help you discover the program that not only suits your personality, but also brings you joy.

It's great you are asking for help! Suggest talking to a guidance counselor at school if available. Also talk to your parents, a trusted relative or neighbor who you consider to be successful. No matter what career you choose, wanting to do well will motivate you to stay on the path to success.

With every good wish.

Kimberly’s Answer

I would think about what subjects and hobbies you excelled in during high school and what those subjects and hobbies might apply to career wise. If you are good at math and problem solving, then engineering, architect, or even photography would be a good avenue to consider and look into. These career paths all involve mathematic skills and the ability to manipulate with a good eye for artistic detail. If you’re more into scientific math, computer science or physics are another field to consider, especially if you’re into how things work with a hands on approach. And remember that the knowledge and skills you gain in mostly any field can be laterally applied if you decide to change careers. One other point to think about is your financial goals. Will the career you choose pay for the lifestyle you envision? There are plenty of resources in college including career coaches and skill tests to help map out a visual of all the traits you have and where they can take you.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you have interest in engineering. There are many streams in engineering, eg electrical & electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, manufacturing engineering, computer engineering, etc. Each has own specific knowledge domain.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Find out more on these engineering careers and determine what you have interest
2. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
3. Attend the information session hosts by college engineering facility
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
