DENNIS’s Answer

Daniel: As a "semi-retired" New York lawyer I can attest that there are many ways to build a career in the law. As Yesenia points out, you need to complete college, take the LSATs and get into a law school. After that you need to take the Bar Exam in the State you wish to practice in and you are good to go!
Building a career will depend upon what type of law you wish to practice. As a New Yorker I'd suggest you take a trip to Centre Street and go into any of the Court houses there and watch. 60 Centre has the bulk of civil cases, 500 Pearl has most of the Federal cases and 100 Centre has the Criminal cases (but I'd wait untill this Trump stuff is over) Go in and watch. If you want to do Family Law (where Judge Judy started) walk over to the Family Courthouse and watch. Estate stuff is in 60 but those trial are few and far between. Go in and talk to the clerks and Judges about what they do. Stop a lawyer or two - they all love to talk.
Practicing law can be very stressful. Remember -it's the client not you that counts in the equation. Keep that in mind and you'll be fine and will build a great career! Good luck!!
