Lauren-Leigh’s Answer

Sports is all about practice and consistency. If you want to get good at something, you must dedicate the time to practice it, and often!
Something that I have learned in life, is that you regret the chances you don't take or the things that you want to do but are too scared to try.
If you never try, you will never know.
I would suggest that you work on building your self-confidence by setting yourself small, achievable goals that you can work toward. Maybe its a good idea to do research on the sport you are most interested in (This is important - deciding what sport really excites you) and maybe join a community group or hanging around an informal space to play (eg. Basketball courts near your house) to meet other people who share the same interests as you. It might also be a good idea to speak with a school coach or teacher who organises sports at your school to ask how you can get involved and learn more about the sport.

If you are worried about getting "picked" for a team, or question whether you are "good enough" to join a team sport; remember there are also individual sports like running that you can do without joining a team.

Lauren-Leigh recommends the following next steps:

Decide on a Sport
Practice, Practice, Practice
Speak to a teacher or someone who plays the sport (peer or grown up)
Find and join local games or groups where it is not competitive but the sport played for fun
Research your sport online

Caimin’s Answer

it would help you, I think, to reframe your goals.
At the moment, your goal is to make the team - why not set yourself the goal of
a: getting better at the sport
b: meeting new people and
c: pushing yourself to try something that makes you feel uncomfortable?

It's always scary to try something new, especially when you're trying to join a team of people that are already good at what you want to do!
But take it step by step - first see if you can practice with the team, get better and learn more about your sport, and then see where it takes you. Maybe you'll decide you don't like the sport!
