In my opinion, the best way to be a good business manager is to set a good example for your employees. Be kind, empathetic, and assume positive intent. Listen to what your employees have to say. Create an environment where people feel safe being themselves and try to have a positive outlook even when things become stressful.

Hi Marie,

As other have said, the one of the best things you can do is to lead by example. Be willing to get into the weeds with your team and do what they do from time to time. Showing true interest in their career growth and development is something that my best leaders have done for me, and something I practice with my team. While they are my employees, we are all people first. Caring about their lives, interests and passions both inside and outside of the office can really build an exceptional team bond.

Some other things I have done with my team is to have more relaxed one on one conversations. Setting up coffee chats, either in person or virtual, to have open discussions on what your employees would like to do and how they would like to grow really help build a supportive atmosphere. It takes a lot of work, but once you open that door and have those conversations, I think you will see a growth in employee moral as well as work effort.

One last thing I will add, is that a mindset I keep is to have a "work with" method of leadership rather than a "work for" method. by employing a lot of what others have posted and working to empower your team for success, I think you can have an exceptional career as a leader and a devoted team.

You will always be employed if you go in the accounting field. Be a good leader by being a good example. Don't talk about employees to other employees. Don't berate employees in front of other staff. Praise often, Criticize with constructive thoughts.
