How to become successful in art without investing?

If you're thinking fine art as far as drawing, painting, etc., you'll have to make an investment to start as far as supplies and the quality. Better quality means spending a little more on the brushes, easal, paint, and anything else to produce good art along with your skills. The other investment is time. Make sure its a passion you want to pursue and be consistant with it. Any field you select takes time, dedication, and persistence, combined with all the skills you have to grow and succeed. Start out small and finish one painting. Then, when you go to sell, price your art accordingly and you’ll get back what you spent, plus a difference. Say you spend a hundred dollars on supplies, then sell your art for five hundred dollars…you just made four. Those little baby steps will help pay off your supplies, keep your dream in check, and make a return in profit. That time you’ve taken is money well spent and the outcome will reward your goal, a feeling of accomplishment.

In the future, it may be helpful to invest in your career as an artist, but it's totally possible to be successful as an artist without spending heaps of money on degrees and whatnot. At your age, the only thing you really need to invest in is time. Do art in any spare time you have! And practice. practice. practice. Watch YouTube tutorials, enter in any art contests online or locally, and just do as much art as you can before you're old enough for your career to really kick off!

The number #1 advice from my experience going back to when I was in grammar school,...Always keep in mind that you love what you are doing regardless of how well you think your art work is. Passion is a key part of why you or anyone excels no matter if it's art or something else! Don't over criticize yourself while being objective but listen to what others tell you from their own perspectives and make that a fundamental baseline for growth as you progressively improve on style and technique and finding your niche. Look at other artists styles and techniques to help inspire you but be your own true self as you continue to develop a portfolio. This is the time to find yourself so try not to be impatient. Go with the flow and always keep in mind that you are loving what you are doing. Keep an open mind as you are on your journey with goals for your artwork and you will find resources that lead to many avenues that can guide you towards a career in art or illustration. Living life by following your heart and fulfilling your passion is your success, This will be your power behind seeking the career you are looking for!

Congratulations on deciding to follow your passion. Art is a beautiful way to express yourself, inspire others and create change in the world. I would suggest viewing as much art as you can in books, magazines, videos, parks and museums. See what you are excited about.
You can create art by using found objects in nature. I’ve used the pigment from flowers like roses and bougainvillea. I’ve used spices like paprika and turmeric. I’ve used coffee and tea to stain watercolor paper, canvas and mixed media paper. I’ve used spinach and onion peels as natural paint too.
You can repurpose items into art. I recently submitted three pieces of art for consideration for a local art exhibition. The theme is Pollution or Solution. We were encouraged to use recycled items to create our pieces. I used things like plastic cup lids, worn out socks, paper coffee filters, dried roses, broken dishes, sea shells, sea glass, packing material paper, tarnished silverware and a rusted mirror. Look around your home and consider using items you’d normally recycle or toss in the trash and see if you can find a new use for them.
Items like gift wrapping paper, old books, magazines, newspapers are perfect for creating collages or mixed media pieces. If someone you know like a neighbor recycles items too ask if you can have access to their recycling bin to obtain paper items.
I’d suggest watching art tutorials online. See what other people are creating. See what they are using. The Dollar Store has an arts and crafts aisle. Items are inexpensive and varied.
Coloring books can be inspiring. Things like Playdoh and kids watercolor or poster paint aren’t just for kids.
Use your imagination and see what you can envision. Take advantage of free resources online, at the library or in your community. If you have a chance to visit an arts and crafts fair do so. It’s a great opportunity to speak with the artists and craftspeople.
