Hello everyone, I am an incoming student at a university where I will study electrical engineering. Basically, I have been very tempted by the Ai Chip startups for the past 2-3 months. I would like to know how those who start ai chip, processor, and hardware startups, or semiconductor startups, get started at such a young age. SambaNova was founded in 2017, Cerebras was founded in 2015, and Alphabet Inc. was founded in 2015, despite its affiliation with Google! But I really want to prepare for this from the beginning! Good question- There is a barrier to entry for good chip designs. The startups that have sprung up are all chasing the demand for GPU's like Nvidia H100s, so investors are funding them- however the longer term outlook like in all startups is uncertain. More so in the chip design industry because of the ebbs and flows of demand as well as the capital intensive nature of the industry to produce chips at scale. More recently there has been a movement to open source hardware designs and chip designs. This is to encourage greater entrepreneurship in this space. Look up frameworks like SMAPPIC from University of Michigan, IEE SSCS PICO program and Meta's OCP for open source hardware.
With the increasing demand for AI, GenAI applications across sectors and industries like automotive, robotics etc, the demand for newer and more efficient chip designs is bright for the coming years. Good luck in your research and studies!
