Hello Choosing between a music or design major depends on your personal interests, skills, and career goals. Consider your passion for each field, your aptitude in music or design, and the opportunities available in each industry. Research the curriculum and career prospects for both majors, and think about the type of work you can envision yourself doing in the future. Additionally, explore your strengths and weaknesses in each area and evaluate how each major aligns with your long-term goals and aspirations. Ultimately, choose the major that resonates with you the most and offers the best pathway for your desired career.

Atul’s Answer

From what you've shared, it's clear that your heart beats for music and you're eager to turn this passion into a career that not only pays the bills but also brings your dreams to life.

Take a good look around you, in your homeland, and you'll find a wealth of opportunities in both music and design. With your impressive collection of diplomas in classical Indian Music, you're well-equipped to make your mark. If you're confident in your abilities, why not aim high and seek internships with renowned music composers like A R Rahman and others?

But remember, the world of music is vast and diverse. Don't confine yourself to Bollywood alone. Venture out and connect with celebrated artists in the realm of Classical Indian music as well.

This approach will surely pave the way for a bright and fulfilling career in music. Keep going, and let your love for music guide you on this exciting journey!

Varsha’s Answer

Hi Ruchi,

Your question really resonated with me because it relates to my own path in college and my own experiences! I was a Business major and a Music minor in college. And I, just like you, have been learning Indian classical music for a long time! I'm also into other types of music, such as pop/RnB and choir, so very much a music nerd lol.

While I understand that what works for one may not work for all, I personally felt really comfortable and satisfied with my Business major/Music minor approach. The reason I did a Business major is that I had always had a passion for the Business world and wanted to dive deeper into it. I've also always been passionate about Music and wanted to continue it in college. The reason I did a Music minor, rather than major is because a. I wanted to do a Business major to thoroughly learn about the Business world, rather than scratching the surface and b. I wanted to learn new things! The Music major already covered several things that I had been learning for years (such as Music theory). As for the Music minor, it had some more unique genres of Music that I would not be able to learn otherwise (i.e. Brazilian Samba, Indonesian Gamelan).

I also feel like this Major/Minor balance (rather than a double major) didn't overwhelm me and let me enjoy other aspects of the college experience, like a social life and joining clubs. Based on my own experience, I highly recommend a Design major and a Music minor for you. Design majors and pretty broad and really help you build that foundation. (I did some design electives, and I can say that they go pretty in-detail!) And a Music minor is a great way to stay in touch with Music and possibly explore areas of Music that you may not already be familiar with!

But of course, this is your journey, and you should do what feels right to you. What I shared is just an approach worth considering as you make this decision!

I hope this helps! Best of luck Ruchi, on your Design journey, Musical journey, and otherwise :)
Thank you comment icon Thanks for this noble advice mam, i am so thankful to you, but i am not sure which college in india will provide this major minor combination??😊 Ruchi

Ann’s Answer

I faced this same exact dilemma. Do I pursue voice performance? Or do I enter the field of interior design and find a career? I started out by studying interior design as my major and had a music performance minor, but the music minor was very involved and started to disrupt work on my major. I ultimately decided that I did not need a degree in vocal performance in order to be a professional in that field if I choose that path later in life. I decided to stay in choir and take vocal lessons and that was all I truly needed. When I graduated, I took my career into the interior design field because that is a more stable career than having to work in the music field.

E'Carl’s Answer

Hi Ruchi:

Great question!

Suggestions:

Go to Social Media (e.g., Tik Tok, Facebook, Snapchat. etc.)

See if there are intern opportunities and/or on-line courses where you can 'test' your knowledge and aptitude for each major.

Also, Google 'Myers/Briggs' to see if your test results can provide clues if your 'personality type' would be a 'good fit' for either major.

Last, start a 'career journal' and try to honestly answer why each potential major would be a good choice from personal satisfaction, future salary, promotions, what colleges/universities offer the best cost (e.g., a community college might be more affordable than a 4 year college or private school), availability and hiring trends (good resource is 'Green Door'- for salaries based on geographical locations).

I hope this helps!

All the best in your future career aspirations!

Stay Positive and Believe in Yourself~

Arjun’s Answer

Hi Ruchi!
Congratulations on your multiple achievements in music. As a CBSE board graduate I Fully understand the pressures coming your way next two years. Here is my perspective:
1. What do you want out of your life? - Please know that as you grow, priorities change and responsibilities add up fairly quickly.
2. As someone who's uniquely positioned to answer this for you -
a. I have multiple friends who pursued music, most of them had alternate careers as well. Some who made it big had easier paths than others
(think generations of musicians in their family, Padma Vibhushan winners etc. etc.) - while this isn't to say that they didn't put in 12 hours of
effort each day or they lacked talent they definitely had guidance that most people wont.
b. Design schools offer quite a lot of career paths, we have great schools with placements - think NIFT, NID, Shrishti.
I'm Happy to put you in touch with people from both fields. My Personal recommendation would be to pursue design while having music too - you could do competitions, get chances to be recognized and find earning opportunities.

Salonda’s Answer

If you're at this decision point, I'm sure you are good in both areas. So, which area excites you and even on a bad day it brings you joy? I graduated with a degree in Vocal and Piano performance/Minor in business information technology (design software and creative design). I was at a similar cross road like yourself wondering which journey to pursue. I see many resources have been provided for you to research but I say, 'go with your passion'. It's rare that your compensation will equate what you think it should in the beginning... your joy and love for the craft must motivate you to continue the journey. And honestly, the talents within you have not been unlocked for no reason. As you precede in the journey there will come a time that you will be able to marry both passions together.

I world suggest looking into careers in the fields you're interested in first, check the requirements for the position, then decide. If the requirement is simple like a degree in anything, then do what you love.

Jennifer’s Answer

Hi Ruchi,
It's wonderful that you have a passion for both music and design! Here are some factors to consider when deciding between pursuing a major in music or design:

1. Interest and Passion: Consider which subject you are most passionate about. Reflect on which one brings you the most joy and fulfillment when you engage with it.

2. Skills and Experience: Take into account your skills and experience in both music and design. Since you have already completed 5 levels of Indian classical music diploma, you may have a stronger foundation in music. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in both areas.

3. Career Opportunities: Research the career opportunities available in both music and design fields. Consider the job market, potential salary, and growth prospects for each field to help you make an informed decision.

4. Academic Programs: Look into the academic programs offered for music and design majors at various universities or colleges. Consider the curriculum, faculty, facilities, and resources available in each program.

5. Personal Goals: Think about your long-term goals and aspirations. Consider how a major in music or design aligns with your personal and professional goals.

6. Combination of Both: If you are passionate about both music and design, you may also explore the possibility of pursuing a double major, minor, or taking courses in both areas to combine your interests.

Ultimately, the decision should be based on what aligns best with your interests, skills, and goals. It's important to follow your heart and choose a path that excites and motivates you. You can also seek guidance from teachers, counselors, and professionals in the music and design industries to help you make an informed decision.

Best of luck!
Jennifer

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Ruchi !

It's wonderful to know that you are very talented and quite accomplished and I would like to give some advice.

My advice is to study both your passions. Music and design can very well be studied simultaneously in a college setting. Just pick one for your major and the other for your minor. Both major subjects have off-campus opportunities to study, so you really win with this combination of future careers. You can always take community or online music and design classes to pinpoint any subjects that perhaps you're interested in but the college may not offer. I have left some links below for you.

So it would be a question of whether or not your college traditionally has students taking a minor. If not, then you'd have to choose between Graphic Design and Music as the major. I would suggest that you obtain as many certifications in both subjects. You do not necessarily need to do them right now, but consider that certifications will enhance your knowledge, experience and carry weight when you seek employment. Branch out and find more information about the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in India. I have left their website link below.

You should also check your regions' calendar for music festivals and activities connected to the type of music you specialize in. I would advise to look more into what type of design career you want and explore those careers. Read employment notices to see what employers are requiring as far as education and experience. By exploring design a bit further, it may make it easier for you to choose a major or if your college offers minors, which one should be your major and which should be your minor.

My advice is to pursue both music and design as they seem to be good subjects that one can do simultaneously and have options with the education path. I advise to not give either one up.

I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best !
