What are some tips for finding an internship in college?
Hello! I'm a rising junior, and I'm trying to look for internships for summer 2025. I'm not sure on my major, but was thinking maybe music or art. I was wondering how you get an internship for something in this field -- or if it's better to just focus on a portfolio. Does it matter what the internship is in, or does it just look good to have anything? Ideally I'd like something music related (really anything) AND to make a good portfolio. But I'm not sure where to start with finding internships in that field. Thanks!

Connect with your professors and your advisors. I recommend seeking paid internship opportunities, but you can get class credit for them at the very least. That way it's easier to manager your time and it counts towards your degree. Plus you'll be able to a professor become a mentor at your college and help elevate skills you obtain/develop.
So I would start by speaking with your favorite professors/advisors and asking for their advice/recommendations. Begin creating connections for your network, which is a crucial part of landing a job down the road.

Most colleges provide a career fair for their students. This is a great way of finding different opportunities for an internship with a variety of different companies. The fairs allow you to engage with recruiters face to face and try to get your name out there into the discussion. It's important to be prepared when going to the career fairs and do some research beforehand to figure out which companies will be present. Just showing up to the fair does not guarantee that you will find an internship. It is on you to sell yourself and your skills to the recruiter and make yourself a strong candidate for the open positions.
Another method of finding an internship is to talk to professors that are currently conducting research or working on projects that you have interest in. This does not have to be limited to professors that you know, although it may increase your chances of being recruited by the professor if they know who you are. Do not be afraid to reach out to a professor to express interest in their work. Most of the time, they are more than happy to discuss their projects with students. If they think you are capable enough and have the right credentials, then they will be willing to offer you an internship working with them.
