How can I work overseas with an HR Management bachelors degree ?

I am currently an HR Assistant for a Manufacturing company, but my ultimate dream would be to work overseas for a manufacturing or oil/gas company.

I do not work in HR but work side by side with many Oil and Gas professionals. If your dream is to work internationally in the field, there is no better place in the United States to be than Houston.

Many international companies work out of Houston and your best bet would be to make inroads with one and move within the company. Places like McDermott, Exxon, and Aramco are in your backyard. Companies that support the industry, such as DeepOcean or Great Lakes Dredge, are there too and are international.

I encourage you to apply and connect with as many industry professionals in your area as possible and try to grow from the inside.

If I could also add something to this discussion, it would be the idea of you to engage with international HR communities or forums so as to learn from others who have made similar transitions. This will might help you broaden your understanding and also build a network of contacts who can offer support and opportunities. Additionally, you could always look for mentors who have navigated international careers successfully. Their guidance can be really valuable, by offering you insights that simple research, or books and courses cannot provide.

Working overseas can be a great learning experience, both professionally and personally! If you’re happy with the company you currently work for, find out if they have any global opportunities that would be relevant for you & your career goals & then talk with your manager to express your interest in an international assignment. Its important to find out what your company’s (or any company’s) policy & strategy is for moving employees to other countries. If your current employer does not have opportunities outside of the US, I suggest researching which companies in your industry do have global opportunities & start applying for jobs at those companies. Again, it’s good to express your interest & goal of working overseas at some point in your career so that your manager/employer can help you get the relevant experience that may be needed to make an international move. A college professor once answered a very similar question for me, and I find his advice very useful. If you are looking for an international career, become as proficient as you can in the career that you intend to pursue, and then seek international opportunities in that area. Knowing a foreign language and having some experience living or studying overseas can help, but I think most companies looking to send somebody overseas will be looking first for someone who can do the job, and second for somebody with language/cultural experience. In your case, as you want to work internationally in manufacturing or oil & gas, try to find an HR job in a multinational operator one of those areas, and as you're looking, see if it looks like there would be international opportunities there.
