Jennifer's response is excellent!

I'd like to expand on her "Research Companies" point. If you're at the start of your career, securing a software engineering internship can be challenging due to lack of experience. Therefore, sometimes it's better to apply to as many places as possible (quantity) rather than focusing on in-depth research of each company (quality).

For example, before landing my current job, I faced 32 rejections and 12 companies didn't even respond. And I had good grades and internship experience! So, how can you broaden your search? Here are a few suggestions.

Anna recommends the following next steps:

make a template for your resume and cover letter, then customize just a few sentences to each company's job description. For example, if company X mentions Java but company Y doesn't, and you have experience, add Java to the resume you turn into Company X. However, do NOT add Java to the resume you give to company Y; instead fill that space with something more relevant. This way, you'll customize a little to each company, but you'll be able to send out more job applications.
use synonyms on job search sites. For example, on Indeed, search "programmer internship" and "software engineer internship" and "software internship" and so on separately. You'll get to see more jobs as a result.
embrace different results than you expect: you might face a lot of job rejections and/or companies that never respond to you. It's okay and it's normal! Pat yourself on the back, write out a list of why you want to get a software internship, and know that no matter what, you'll learn more about professionalism and about yourself.
