Hi Coner. If I were to become a car salesman I’d immediately want to try and learn about all the makes and models that Toyota provides.
Then when you did that. You learn about the performance of the cars. Which car has the most HP. Which one is the cheapest but has the best performance.
If you can learn how to answer the most common questions that everyone asks. You’ll be an amazing car dealer.

- Putting the product aside, running a dealership is a business. Michelle described the different aspects of that such as financing, staffing, marketing, and sales. Include in that where there might be sufficient demand for a new Toyota dealership or whether you might want to buy an existing one. Be disciplined enough to write down your plan so you will see gaps in the information. There are templates online for business plans or Toyota may have one - I have put below a ContactUs link for them. I also found another link - see below.
- Rather than just shadow, I suggest actually working at a dealership, even if it is not one for Toyota. It would help you understand better how all the departments work together and help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Some things that you can do now to prepare you to become a Toyota Car Dealer would be to take some business classes in high school and decide if you want to go to college or not. You will also have to start saving now because you will have to eventually buy many cars for your dealership along with other expenses and it will be very, very expensive to invest in a car dealership.
Once you are ready to begin, check your states' car dealership laws, requirements and regulations. You will need a good credit score in order to finance your dealership. There are also start up costs, licensing fees and various other expenses that come up. It can be very costly so you should research what it costs to open a dealership. Next, come up with a business plan and consult with an attorney to make sure you will have the right structure for your dealership. You then have to apply for a Dealer License at the Department of Motor Vehicles. You would get a background check done at the DMV, show proof of insurance, show proof of where your dealership is located, and submit your business plan and financial statements to the DMV.
You will have to research financing options and secure the financing for your dealership. You will buy cars for your dealership and mechanic tools and machines. You will then hire staff and market your business. You will then have to obtain liability, property and workers compensation insurance. You will also need to obtain a business license, a sales tax permit and environmental permits. While up and running, you can enjoy attending trade shows and industry events to network.
At first, you can get a Shadow experience by visiting one of the local dealers near you. Try visiting Hendrick Toyota Merriam, Olathe Toyota and McCarthy Honda who also sells Toyotas. Try all of the dealerships even if they do not deal in Toyotas. A shadowing experience will give you the opportunity to see the daily activity and ask questions.
