What would be the best thing to study for when trying to become a deputy?

I'm in Job Corps now and I'm going into protective services to get an unarmed private security guard license, and I'm thinking on what else should I do to help me become a deputy

Cameron,

Although your current path is fine, you should look into requirements for becoming a deputy sheriff in your area.

Many agencies require at least some college education. This usually is either 60 credit hours, but can be up to a bachelors degree. You dont have to major in criminal justice, but it may help you understand and get used to law enforcement terminology, theories, laws, etc.

Some agencies have auxiliary police. These are volunteer officers, usually unarmed, who assist with foot and vehicle patrol, traffic control, etc. You do not go hands on or directly assist with calls, but it does give you some experience in the culture and make connections.

Lastely, being a military vet is a plus. It shows discipline, team work, an ability to handle and perform under stress, and dedication to serve. You can even become a police officer as your MOS.

These are the top suggestions I would have for you preparing to get into law enforcement.

Best of luck
