how to be a good educator as a teacher?

i am an undergraduate student from University Halu Oleo, i'd like to change my country consider based on a lot of negative issues recently especially average indonesian IQ average is under 100, and i wanna change my country through education

Thank you comment icon This is a difficult question. I am a former high school teacher and can tell you the the IQ test is generally for American's whose first language is English and all of their family (parents, grandparents, etc.) have English as their first language. Indonesians have the same amount as average, above average and below average students as American's do. I'm sure the Indonesian public schools have a test for determining intelligence. Hi Nabilah!
First of all, I wouldn't make any life decisions solely on the basis of IQ Tests. As you mentioned, Intelligence tests contain cultural bias—they contain a strong bias that is in favor White, middle class groups; for example: (a) the tests measure knowledge and content that are more familiar to White, middle class students than to diverse students; (b) the language on these tests is more familiar to White, middle class students; and (c) the examples used in questions are more familiar to White, middle class students.
Second, there are many outstanding and notable graduates of University Halu Oleo, including governors, scientists, and members of parliament. So I would suggest that it's not so much where you get your education that's most important, but how you apply yourself and what you do with it.
That said, there is nothing wrong with seeking education in foreign schools. But you also need to consider other issues such as having to learn a new language, cost of living and attendance, proximity to family and friends, and the availability of future career opportunities. Please take your time in making a decision.
Good luck on your journey - I know you'll do great!

Hello, Nabilah Nur !

Wow, this is a very interesting question and I am greatly impressed at your deep desire to make a difference in people's lives through education. Let's first see about the World-IQ Test which I think is where you have read statistics from. The World-IQ test, although it is said that it is impartial and precise, it's purpose is to test how people would do or their capacity to compete on a global level. Here's something to think about. How many people in your country plan to compete on a global level and how many Indonesians have taken the World-IQ test ? How important is it to you or will be for your students to compete on a global level ? How many people want to ? I mean, you can stand on this test's results, but there are many other ways to evaluate a student's capabilities than testing all of them on a global scale. You can do what you want with the results, but there already exist many successful professionals in your country. Some of the successes are in the fields of property and construction, technology, mining operations, compliance and risk management, government relations, sales, utilities, investment banking, engineering and the list goes on.

You are already in your first step to becoming a wonderful teacher. There is no need to shoot for "changing" your country, rather you will greatly add to, motivate and shape your students lives, each with their own aspirations and outlook on the world. I would say to continue at University and obtain any certifications that are required to become a teacher for the grade level or university level you choose. Think about becoming a volunteer tutor or getting a tutoring job remotely online that you can do in your spare time.

You are attending a fabulous college that values research and community service. You should speak with one of your professors about doing either a research or community service project focusing on special issues in Education. The more experience you obtain in undergraduate school, the more you will sharpen your abilities and have much to contribute to your students. If you continue your vibrant enthusiasm for teaching, you will be great at your future career. Each student takes away something different from education that will add to their future, too.

I hope that this is helpful and something to think about as you continue your studies and greatly help your community as an educator ! Best wishes to you !
