Hello Kathleen,

Are you dreaming of becoming a police officer after you graduate from high school? Here's a roadmap to help you achieve your goal:

Education: The first step is to complete your high school education or its equivalent. Remember, some police departments may require additional college credits or even a degree.

Research: Knowledge is power. Make sure to understand the requirements and application processes of the police departments you're keen on joining.

Physical Fitness: Policing is a physically demanding job. So, it's crucial to maintain a high level of fitness.

Application: Once you're ready, apply to your chosen police departments. Brace yourself to excel in written exams, physical fitness tests, background checks, and interviews.

Police Academy: If your application is successful, you'll need to complete training at the police academy. This includes courses on law enforcement procedures, self-defense, and firearms use.

Field Training: After the academy, you'll gain practical experience by working under the guidance of a field training officer.

Continuing Education: Never stop learning. Engage in ongoing education and training to stay updated and enhance your skills.

Remember, every step you take brings you closer to your dream. You've got this, Kathleen!

D.J.’s Answer

Hi Kathleen,

It's great to see that Isabel and Deborah have already shared some valuable insights with you. Alongside their advice, I'd love to point you towards a few websites that could be useful in your search for police jobs.

One website I highly recommend is www.golawenforcement.com. It's a fantastic resource for police jobs all over the country. You'll be able to see the specific requirements for each job, including whether you'll need to attend a police academy at a community college, or if the department will provide the training for you.

Another excellent site is www.usajobs.gov, where you can find federal police jobs. This includes positions with the U.S. Capitol Police, Supreme Court Police, Bureau of Engraving and Printing Police, and the US Park Police in Washington DC. Plus, there are plenty of other police agencies to consider, such as the Special Agent/Criminal Investigator with FBI, ATF, DEA, Diplomatic Security Service, and various Offices of Inspectors General.

Remember, having good grades, maintaining physical fitness, and having a clean criminal record can significantly improve your chances. I'm rooting for you, Kathleen, and I wish you nothing but success in your journey and future endeavors.
