Admission Officers: Should I join my local Youth activities Council? Would that boost my overall college app, or should I save that time and spend it somewhere more useful?

While I do need to show some community service, I am interested in majoring in business and am wondering whether to spend that time working towards writing for financial literacy or join this Council where I don't know which mission it will most likely serve. I would like to hear the perspective of admission officers if possible.

Hi Vanshika - the answer is in how you phrased the question. You already say joining is Youth Activities Council is not the best use of your time and you don't know for what purpose, so don't do it. Financial literacy seems to be a better fit, if that actually interests you. If not, find something that genuinely interests you. Then, the commitment and leadership that Isabel mentioned will flow naturally.

I have been to many, many college information sessions and was an alumna interviewer for many years. There is no one activity that admissions officers want to see. Yes, get involved in the community if you have time, but in a way that makes sense for you.

Good luck!

I am no college admission officer, but you should definitely join the youth student council! Not only does it display leadership, a key component of entrepreneurship , it is beneficial for the student body as a whole. That being said, you can still hone your financial literacy skills simultaneously and work towards in your spare time.

Hello Vanshika!

Joining the local Youth Activities Council can really give your college application a boost. It shows admission officers that you're a leader, you're involved in your community, and you're a team player. But if you're all about business, it might be a better idea to focus on things like financial literacy or spend your time on activities that have a business vibe. This way, you're showing what you're really passionate about and what you want to achieve.

Admission officers do appreciate candidates who have a wide range of interests, but linking your extracurricular activities to your chosen major can give your application an extra edge. If you can, try to mix it up a bit: get involved in the community service council and take on some projects with a business focus. This will show that you're truly dedicated to the field you want to study.

Hello, Vanshika !

Although I am not an admissions officer and never have been, I do have some thoughts in the way of advice for you. I like how ambitious you sound and that will take you far in anything you do.

About your Youth Activities Council. San Mateo is very special because it has a Youth Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and Employment program through their Youth Leadership Institute. This sounds just what you are looking for as an aspiring business person. Perhaps what is called the Youth Activities Council is fine, but consider changing to this more focused program. I left the link below to their website so you can consider it as a possible option.

The city of San Mateo, California also offers Youth Programs as well as volunteer work. Even if the opportunities are in the realm of non-profit or social service you may come across an opportunity you may like. Learning for-profit, non-profit and how government is run will give you a good variety of knowledge for business. I have left a link below for you to obtain more information.

Another option for you would be to look into the County of San Mateo's Youth Commission. They seem to offer leadership experiences and that would help you greatly for a future in business. Also keep in mind, as a future business leader, you may become one of the Board of Directors at a company or agency, so honing your leadership skills would be great for any career. Also keep in mind the possibility of you managing staff as a business person and how volunteer work you receive now can help you in college and in the future.

What you can do before making a choice is to go to the website of what is the local Youth Activities Council, the one that you've specifically mentioned, and see what the opportunities consist of. If you are not interested in any of what they offer, consider the other options I have mentioned here. Keep in mind that doing any type of volunteer work is going to benefit you. You will be working as a team, independently, taking direction, communicating and these are definitely things that one brings to any career.

Also keep in mind that although extracurriculars and volunteer work are important on college applications, they also look at your high school GPA, your SAT or ACT scores and what courses you took in high school. I think that you are preparing yourself well and it's really great that your town has a lot of opportunities.

Best wishes in all you do !
