Hello, Jasmine !

Since you are not yet in college, I do not recommend any Internships for a Medical Assistant position because those positions are offered to students towards the end of their schooling or to actual Medical Assistants who are certified or licensed to practice. You would be expected to do preliminary exams and vitals testing directly on patients, so an internship is not exactly going to serve you at this time.

Your first step will be to read all about what a Medical Assistant is. Next, research about what is needed to become a Medical Assistant. I have left links below for this information. If you decide that it is definitely the field you want to go into, I would suggest doing volunteer work.

It would be a great experience for you to do volunteer work at a lab or pharmacy. Go the the Human Resources departments of all your nearby hospitals and pharmacies to inquire about this possibility. Another option to get experience working with a substantial amount of people would be to volunteer at a community or social service. Sometimes, depending on where you obtain employment when you graduate college, Medical Assistants are assigned administrative duties among other things, so having experience with lots of people will be a good foundation.

Internships in college are usually discovered through being in your major department, reading postings or professors making an announcement. In your first week of college, you can ask your professors if offerings of internships are included in your course of study in the major. Although internships are not required for Medical Assistants, you would be qualified to work as one once you become certified or licensed according to your state's requirements. You can start employment without an internship.

It may be very helpful to read more about what it is like to be a Medical Assistant as well as watch some videos on You Tube in which people talk about the career. That would be a good way to help you make decisions about the career. I have left some videos for you to watch in a link below.

I hope all of this is helpful and I wish you the best in whatever you decide !

Is this an internship or an Externship? In my opinion you need to consider a couple of things. Some people take an externship/internship in hopes that they will get hired from it. If you want to work you pretty much want to let them know to place you in a possible to hired facility.

If you want to simply gain experience you need to determine which area you think you would like best. Some like working OB/GYN, others internal medicine or urgent care. If you simply want to gain as much practice by doing a variety of things I would suggest working family practice. They see patients from newborn on. If many offices they do simple surgeries such as toe nail removals and vasectomy. It is all about your preference. If you have an externship coordinator discuss it with them and they can guide you on deciding the best place to go.

Hi Jasmine,

For internships as a medical assistant, consider the following places:

Hospitals: Larger hospitals often have internship programs and offer a variety of departments to gain experience.

Clinics and Urgent Care Centers: These settings provide opportunities to work in a fast-paced environment and handle a wide range of medical tasks.

Private Practices: Working in a private doctor's office can offer hands-on experience with patient care, administrative duties, and medical procedures.

I suggest you contact an organization called MIM which stands for Mentoring in Medicine. The goal of the organization is to help low income students and minorities access healthcare careers. They provide networking,
Internships, mentoring and scholarships. Google them to obtain their contact information. The company was founded by an awesome physician named Dr.Lynne Holden who is the President and Andrew Morrison who is the CEO.
I have attended lunches they gave where high school students met and mingled with nurse practitioners, medical assistants, surgeons, dermatologists, radiologists, etc. These sessions often led to internships!!!! Please visit this site and discuss your experience after you reach out to them!!!! I have had students in the past report wonderful experiences with this organization.!
