What major should I get if i want to study music?

I want to be a performer, but i want to study something that will help me financially if things don't work out as a performer. #music

Thank you comment icon My friend got a degree in music therapy. He was able to go to a community college and get an associates degree in the major and he is planning on attending a four year university to gain his bachelors within the same field. Music therapy is great for those in nursing homes, long term patients in hospitals, and those with some form of disability. Lauren
Thank you comment icon You should major in Music Production/Recording Matthew

Hi Catherin,

This is such a great question!!!

I think you can blend your interest in music with Careers in STEM and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). This is a very exciting space and whether you are performing music full-time or part-time, you can have an amazing career. The first adopters of technology are often artists. Technology is transformational and helps us tell our stories through music, film, and digital mediums. I work with many engineers, scientists, and computer scientists who make art in addition to having technical careers - most use digital media, computers, 3D printers, and graphics cards...so science to make art. wow! The great thing is that you can do both.

You can study business, or really anything else!

Have you looked into colleges that are more "non-traditional" as far as what and when you can study? (I attended Charter Oak State College to finish up my Bachelor's and designed my own concentration in business/music/psychology/economics, since I loved teaching music and coaching clients in performance.) Or what colleges or other schools can you find where you could design your own major? I always said I would never do that, but in the end I did!

If you're still trying to discover your interests, or more importantly, your gifts and strengths, try using the Strengths Finder assessment online, or simply look at some free CLEP test practice or for similar exams (DSST, Excelsior exams, etc.) Spending some time learning what practice tests you get highest scores on could spark some ideas for what you'd like to study. And at the least, if you discover that you can get great scores on several kinds of tests, you can go and take many exams that various colleges would give you college credits for, so you'd have achieved that much in life without spending a ton of time or money.

Modern States (https://modernstates.org/) is one place that has achieved the rethinking that we're all doing about getting our education and accreditation better than going to an expensive school for years. But I think there might be similar entities nowadays offering similar things.
