What are some colleges with a fashion marketing major? (more affordable than FIT or SCAD)

I’m a high school senior in Oklahoma and want to go to college for fashion marketing! What are the best colleges for that field?

Thank you comment icon Numerous colleges provide a program in fashion studies. I'm based in New Jersey and attended a state college just outside of New York City. I pioneered my own internship, which the college approved, and this marked the beginning of my extensive journey in the fashion industry. Being close to a major market can be beneficial, but in this era of remote work, it's no longer a strict requirement. Wishing you the best of luck on your exciting journey! Janet Francis

Hello, London !

If you are considering keeping college costs low, you will want to first decide to attend an in-state college. Then you will have to find a college that offers a degree in Fashion Marketing (?) or Fashion Merchandising.

The University of Central Oklahoma is in your town of Edmond, but they do not offer a Fashion Merchandising program. Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond has a Bachelors program in Business Administration with an emphasis on Fashion Merchandising. You have these two colleges to choose from if you do not wish to have to spend extra money to move or out of state tuition. My advice is to go to both of these campuses for an orientation and tour so you will be able to make a choice between the two. If you like the University of Oklahoma which doesn't offer fashion merchandising, consider majoring in marketing and taking courses in something related to fashion at the school. You can very easily take something in the Art Department or even a costuming course in the theatre department at which you may be required to sew, sketch and get experience with garments. Since you want the merchandising aspect, it may be beneficial to go the Marketing or business path at which you can do fashion based projects whenever you're assigned to do projects. There are many ways to do this if you need to stay in Edmond and choose between these two colleges. Keep in mind that you can get financial assistance at any accredited college by ways of Federal Financial Aid, Scholarships, Grants and even part time employment.

The aesthetic aspect of fashion will be smooth for you to do independently, on your own, by reading a lot about trends, brands, styles, fabrics, what it's like as a fashion merchandizer, and many other aspects of fashion. You can attend fashion shows, too. Two websites that are in the forefront for having fashion information are You Tube and Pinterest, so you can familiarize yourself with fashion online and in person at any fashion events near your town.

The fashion schools in New York City and Los Angeles, two major fashion hubs, are indeed expensive and so is housing in those two cities. If you are considering going outside of Oklahoma or Edmond, do decide and return here for more information about fashion schools in your nearby states. You will have to go to the websites of the colleges to find out what their tuition is.

I hope that this helps to start you out and I wish you all the best pursuing the education for a most exciting career !

These are all wonderful options! I am sure.
I would like to still put my 5 cents on behalf of FIT in NYC.
It is a college in the State University of NY system of schools. It might seem expensive, but mostly to the out-of-state students. Once you live in the NY state for a year, you get a much better price on tuition.
Plus, they offer many options for financial aid, numerous scholarships, and merit-based financial help. There is also a Continuing Education division that offers all the same classes at night and on the weekend ( I graduated from this program myself, many years ago). If you are up to it, you can have a full-time or a part-time job during the work week, which would pay for your education and living expenses.
Having taught at FIT as well, I can tell you that the Professors at FIT all come from the Industry, and have deep roots and extensive connections in the businesses of NY. Personally, I was always able to connect my students to the companies I had worked for, for the internships and entry-level jobs.
My main point, though, is that NYC offers a highly stylish environment, with people dressing professionally for their day jobs, and dressing provocatively for their club nights, or dressing elegantly for their Opera visits, etc. It is great for spotting trends (in real life, not on TikTok), and to make useful connections at the Department Stores, not to mention the vintage shopping and the fabric stores of the Garment District on 7th Avenue.
All that is said not to diminish the value of education at other schools nationwide. Just trying to stress the value of the environment around the school as well.

Hello London!

Colleges with a Fashion Marketing Major

Suppose you’re looking for colleges that offer a fashion marketing major and are more affordable than the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) or the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). In that case, there are several options across the United States. Below is a comprehensive list of institutions that provide strong programs in fashion marketing or related fields, along with some details about each.

1. University of Central Oklahoma (UCO)
Location: Edmond, Oklahoma
Program: UCO offers a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Marketing through its College of Education and Professional Studies. The program focuses on various aspects of fashion, including merchandising, marketing strategies, and consumer behavior.
Affordability: As a public university in Oklahoma, UCO provides in-state tuition rates that are generally lower than those at private institutions like FIT and SCAD.
2. Kent State University
Location: Kent, Ohio
Program: Kent State’s School of Fashion offers a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising with courses that cover marketing principles specific to the fashion industry.
Affordability: Kent State is known for its reasonable tuition rates compared to many art-focused schools while still providing quality education and resources.
3. Colorado State University (CSU)
Location: Fort Collins, Colorado
Program: CSU offers a Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising with an emphasis on marketing strategies within the fashion industry.
Affordability: As a public institution, CSU offers competitive tuition rates for both in-state and out-of-state students.
4. California State University, Long Beach (CSULB)
Location: Long Beach, California
Program: CSULB has a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising which includes coursework on marketing, retailing, and consumer behavior.
Affordability: CSULB is part of the California State University system, making it more affordable than many private institutions while offering robust programs.
5. The University of Alabama
Location: Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Program: The College of Human Environmental Sciences at UA offers a Bachelor’s degree in Apparel and Textiles with an option to focus on merchandising and marketing.
Affordability: UA provides competitive tuition rates for both residents and non-residents compared to other fashion schools.
6. Iowa State University
Location: Ames, Iowa
Program: Iowa State offers a Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Merchandising with courses focusing on marketing strategies within the fashion sector.
Affordability: As a public university, Iowa State’s tuition is generally lower than that of specialized art schools.
7. Purdue University
Location: West Lafayette, Indiana
Program: Purdue’s Department of Consumer Science offers a major in Retail Management which includes elements relevant to fashion marketing.
Affordability: Purdue is known for its value as an educational institution with reasonable tuition costs relative to its offerings.
Conclusion

When considering colleges for fashion marketing that are more affordable than FIT or SCAD, it’s essential to evaluate not only the cost but also the curriculum offered by each institution. Look into their internship opportunities, faculty expertise, alumni networks, and campus resources dedicated to career development in the fashion industry.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Used:

University Websites - For accurate program descriptions and details about tuition costs.
College Board - For comparative data on college costs and financial aid options.
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) - For information on institutional characteristics including affordability metrics.
