Hello leaky,
Have you used a cell phone? Ridden in a vehicle - on a road and across a bridge? Watched a tractor plow a field?
These things all involved engineers who designed, tested and built them. Are you curious about how things work? Do you take them apart and re-assemble them? Then YOU might have the characteristics of an engineer. We work in many places - in power plants, building roads and bridges, and now, designing and building cell towers, wind turbines and solar panels. You will find us in just about any factory that makes a product. Sometimes the engineer is the Plant Manager. He/she may be the president or CEO of a company. But that comes after you have demonstrated your engineering expertise and demonstrated your organizational skills.
Just about any state-supported university will have a School of Engneering. Michigan has several, e.g. U of M, Michigan State, Mich. Technological Univ. and more. If you can get accepted at any one of them, you could be on your way to an engineering career. Good luck, leaky!

Everything you see, touch and utilized was designed, developed & built by engineers. Ask yourself "How do I want to impact this world we live in?"
Then research schools, careers and the like to determine which direction to go. We can't do it for you.
I have hired many senior level engineers, from civil to aerospace, and can tell you that 99% of them love what they do. Salaries range from $60K to over $120K depending on the scope of the project.
Since you do not know, it will be advantageous to get your studies up to par. Do the research. Gods Speed!

Hi Leaky,
Thanks for the great question!
I am a mechanical engineer by training, and so I will comment on what was interesting for me over my career. Mechanical engineering is a fantastic foundation for many roles. I currently lead a company which helps businesses operate more efficiently using software tools and artificial intelligence aids. Prior to this, I led a team for the Advanced System Integration of defense/military vehicles and projects. In addition, I had many other roles in my career including thermal engineer, design/release engineer, vehicle systems engineer, system safety engineer, and a variety of engineering leader roles. The mechanical engineering foundation enabled me to have a wide variety of career experiences.
A great foundation for this career is math and science classes. To be a mechanical engineer, you would need to go to university for 4 years. Many people enter programs which offer co-op/internships. For these, you can work a few of your school terms. This enables work experience, different career areas to experience, and an opportunity to earn money along the way. For these programs, it could take 5+ years. Mechanical engineering also has many focus areas, so you can pick the area(s) that you find the most interesting. Some examples include: Thermal systems/fluids, Mechanical Structures, Materials, and Automotive design.
Best wishes to you as you explore your future career.

Regarding AI at the workplace and engineering I give you the following.
Yes, AI can and is being used in engineering in several ways:
Design Optimization: AI algorithms can optimize designs for efficiency, cost, and performance.
Predictive Maintenance: AI can predict when machinery or infrastructure will need maintenance, reducing downtime and costs.
Quality Control: AI systems can monitor and improve the quality of manufacturing processes.
Simulation and Modeling: AI helps in creating accurate models and simulations, which can be used to test scenarios before actual implementation.
Data Analysis: AI can analyze large datasets to uncover insights and improve decision-making processes.
