Hello, Obayomi !
I am really happy to know that you are considering and exploring a career in Education. It is a most rewarding career filled with so much variety and authentic sincere admiration for people and their future. You would be an important social and intellectual part of people's lives. The first step to success is to obtain the necessary education and certifications to become a teacher. There are different levels such as primary school, high school, community college or university level, so you will have to decide which grade(s) or level you'd want to teach. With your degree and certification, you would be qualified to teach in both the public and private sectors as well as home schooling. You would need training to teach in the alternative Montessori or Waldorf system. So you see, education takes on many different realms, styles and provides many opportunities which can be explored and you can be successful in one or many of these niches.
It goes without saying that you will learn all you need to know in college about teaching. You don't need to know every single thing now in order to make a choice and knowing everything now will not weigh in on your possible level of success as a teacher. Learn about the career gradually because there really is so much to know. Every teacher's experience in their career is different. One thing you can do now is to see how much college you want to take based on qualifying you to teach which level you want to teach for. I have left links below to websites for information about steps to take and requirements for New York State.
Something can be said about good teachers that may not necessarily weigh in on "success" but to aim for effective and memorable teaching may be a good goal. Successful teachers, the way I see it, are ones that show how much they care about the students, how they realize students all learn in different ways and ones that students remember fondly for a lifetime. That, to me, is a successful teacher.
Once you become a teacher, you will have continual education for yourself and attend conferences. To give you an idea of the conferences - many are held in Albany - I have left a link below to a website that will give you an idea of the topics presented at the conferences. Teachers who actively stay involved with education and continue their trainings and certifications are usually successful with their teaching.
So it is great that you are thinking about this now but do not worry over your career outcomes, success or failure. As you experience your academic path you will understand what you'll need to do and see your options clearly. You will also bring your own special flair to the career that will help you stand out as unique.
I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best while learning more about this awesome career interest !
