Linda’s Answer

Juana good morning, I have been an Interior Designer for my entire life, I was born one. This may sound strange but it is my gift and passion and I am so lucky to have known this from the beginning. I have been driven by the creative need to express the beauty and order I see in my mind. I don't know how I know how to do such skillful design but this is how I polished and taught myself how to successfully use this amazing creative energy.
The first thing I looked at the world around me, I mean really looked how everything moves and interacted everything, a runaway tennis ball and how it found its eventual stopping place, how a small stream of sunlight could change the look in a space. I became a sponge and absorbed shadows, bulky chunks of wood concrete, or any other material that caught my attention. I found this big beautiful puzzle that fit together, some places it worked well and others it didn't and needed to be thought out and fixed with a better design that was seamless, cohesive and functioned to well serve the environment and inhabadince of the space. The ones I could fix I did, like a unruly closet I would turn into a beautiful functional jew box or a study space by adding a lower shelf as a desk top and lamp for lighting and paint beautiful colors add a small stool . I discovered there is design in everything and there is a lot of work to be done for it is ever changing and moving and needs to be arranged and rearranged for a cohesive and purposeful resolution. I began recording the things I found and stored them in a mental library including colors, shapes, light, textures . I included objects like lamps, rugs, artwork and door pulls, every fabric I had ever seen ,wallpaper etc. as much as my brain could hold. Turns out to be a lot. I still many many years later rely on my wealth of all things design mental library in my head.
You must become a sponge and find the places you can fix the small ones to learn your aesthetic , like even a straw hat that need a wider and more colorful ribbon do this small thing and you will see the difference that one small change will have, you will be amazed, and when you do design work you will never miss the small details so important in design. Work at the things you find that need better design and don't be afraid to suggest ideas and improvements build your confidence, believe in yourself this will become easier as you practice finding and improving places in the puzzle around you. Get an education it will polish your skills and give you confidence. Work harder than anyone you know with a positive additude and your client will follow. Always honor them with the truth, and quickly take responsibility for any mistakes or missteps so they are resolved immediately you will gain the trust and respect of others.
Interior Designer is a lot of work with a lot of moving parts and you must keep your head in the game. You will have Clients, Contractors, Vendors and any number of people looking to you for leadership on your projects so lead with integrity and you will have happy clients beautiful results time and time again but most important a happy life spent. Good luck!
