Hello, I would like to know about the perks and benefits of volunteering here at CareerVillage?

I understand that volunteering is more about providing emotional support and helping others. However, I’m curious if there are additional benefits. For example, can I include this experience on my resume? If so, how should I present it? And also how long I have to volunteer to get the experience?Additionally, can I earn credit or service hours from volunteering, as some colleges require those?

Study show that volunteering can help your mental and physical health. We all will also depend on the next generation to support us as we get older and they move into leadership roles. I can think of no better reason to help support and encourage their education and career planning :)

Hello, Pearl !

Thank you for asking an important question about volunteering at Career Village !

Yes, if you become a volunteer here at Career Village, you most definitely can and should include it on your resume. Present it on your resume as Volunteer Work and you can also mention it in your cover letters as something you are currently doing. You can volunteer for any length of time that you choose. I, like some of the other volunteer advisors, have been here about seven years. There are no set hours and you can participate any time 24/7.

To earn credit for college, you may want to ask your college if they offer Practicum credit and the practicum might be for the subjects Education, Social Science, Counseling or an appropriate subject for which you'd have to work it out with the head of your college department to see if you can take credit for it. They will probably set guidelines for it regarding how long you will need to do the work, printing out your advice from this website to show the grading professor so they can evaluate that you did the work for maybe giving you one credit. If you wish to do this, it's important to speak with someone at your college because it is someone there that would make the decision for whether or not you can receive credit for this work.

I hope to see you here as a volunteer ! Best wishes to you !

Hello Pearl!

I am a volunteer for www.careervillage.org and it is rewarding helping young people. I have fifty years experience in the work force and that is good for me to advise people. Often prospective students inquire about prequisites and courses to get into a preferred profession.

Nadia’s Answer

Hi Pearl,
Definitely, volunteering at CareerVillage can be listed on a resume. However, I think that how you present it depends on the roles that you apply for.
Here are some examples of which skills I would highlight for specific jobs:
- Corporate job: effective and professional communication, research, industry knowledge, cultural awareness.
- Marketing/Social Media manager: building a positive image online, writing attractive answers, clear communication, and good grammar/writing skills.
- Counselor/Psychologist: supporting others in careers, emotional intelligence, emotional support, providing a career plan.
Also, sometimes, supporting your experience with some numbers is beneficial. CareerVillage provides an excellent opportunity to do so: you can include the number of answers, recognitions, and positive feedback that you have received.
Good luck!
