Hello Mar, that's a good question. The answer is yes and no.

Advanced training can certainly put someone ahead of other potential candidates. It shows employers that you have taken the initiative to seek out and utilize opportunities to further your skills through the use of formal training. This can be done through obtaining college degrees from accredited institutions and or other organizations that offer certification programs relevant to your field of interest.

Another way to open the door to new opportunities is good old fashioned initiative. Many times employees are promoted based off of their performance. Personally, I was promoted to management this way. I took the initiative to create inventory forms for the bar, standardized some training and volunteered to take on responsibilities related to the operational side of things. Instead of coming to my boss with complaints, I came with solutions: Check-lists for daily tasks that were overlooked, a more accurate inventory system, etc. I was able to work without supervision and could be trusted to use good judgement in handling issues in his absence. After three months, he came to me with a promotion.

As Annah said in another answer, it's important you know if you are going to like the job before you spend money on formal training. Volunteer work is a great way to do that. Not only will you have the opportunity to experience what you would be doing, but it is a great way to gain experience as well.

In short, many times it depends on the industry you are considering. Academic careers require advanced training and degrees 100% of the time. trade industries usually require certification or apprenticeship. Many other industries ( I was in the food service/restaurant industry) open doors through initiative.

My advice? Take every opportunity you can get to learn more about the things you like doing. It won't steer you wrong. '

Mar, my answer is sometimes but not necessarily. It depends on several factors. First, I would suggest something that may seem obvious- make sure you are very interested in the training! it can be costly and take time and commitment. If you are learning something that leverages skills you already have, you will most likely be able to immediately put the new training(s) to use. If it is something entirely new (to you), you may have to take additional training(s) or work experience to build up your knowledge base. I would do some additional research first. Take an inventory for yourself about where you are at in your career development. If you are wanting to move into a management position for example, talk with managers about how they got their expertise, what courses would be most useful, etc. If you are looking to change career fields entirely, you may need an advanced degree, something more intensive. Consider your learning style as well and the background of the person (professor, coach, organization) teaching the course. Is it important for your course to be accredited or affiliated with a certain association or licensing board? What will be the specific learning outcomes? Is the training a stand-alone course or part of a larger program or degree? For instance, I prefer an in-person training where I will be engaged in activities with other people. Keep in mind there are many ways to get where you want to go in life! Assess for yourself what you already know and are good at, gaps in learning (what you want/need to learn), and where you want to end up. You can then begin to do some digging into next steps. It may be as simple as volunteering or finding a mentor. Your employer may even assist you in this if it will lead to retention. If you do the work ahead of time to find out what is expected (as minimum education or training), you can better meet those requirements. Every career path will be different, which is why there is not one right or easy way to respond to this question. This is some of the advice I wish I had known about earlier on in life.
