Sheila’s Answer

Thanks for your great engineering-related questions!

a. Interviewee name: Sheila

b. Interviewee’s specific degree: BS Mechanical Engineering, MS Engineering Science

c. Interviewee’s place of employment: An Agile Business company

a. Please describe your engineering field: I have had the opportunity to do many engineering and engineering manager roles in my career. I am currently leading a company which promotes agile business practices including associated software tools and AI technologies. Prior to this, I was the Senior Manager for Advanced System Integration at a large Automotive/Defense Manufacturer. I am a mechanical engineer by training though I have had electrical and software related roles. I enjoyed many years as an engineer and then evolved my career to be an engineering leader. In one of my recent roles, I lead the advanced team which included CAD designers, engineers (including electrical engineers) and build team technicians. Our team scope was future, advanced military and government vehicles and projects. I had many roles prior to this including thermal engineer, design/release engineer, vehicle systems engineer, system safety engineer, and a variety of engineering leader roles.

b. What is your current job title? Founder/Director of Americas

c. Please describe your particular job and duties. I lead a company and am partnered with another company. I enable businesses to positively transform through practical implementation and acceleration of an agile business software tool and associated artificial intelligence aids. I help foster company agile transformation and regulatory compliance.

d. What is your average work schedule? The workday varies depending on the project, activity, and role, I typically worked 5 days a week, 8-10+ hours a day. When my children were younger, I worked “flex service” (part time - 3 days a week). This enabled the right work-life balance for me and my family.

e. Starting with high school, please describe your educational background chronologically. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in Engineering Science

f. Would you do anything differently if you had it to do over, related to your career or education? I had a wonderful career and would not change a thing. I enjoyed being an engineer and an engineering leader.

g. What advice would you give to me as someone interested in pursuing a career path similar to yours? Engineering is a very exciting field to go in. There is a vast landscape of roles and companies looking for engineers. In high school, a good foundation for engineering is math and science classes. Then, you would need to go to college for 4 years for a degree in engineering. You can take classes (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.) and identify the specialty area which you like – you don’t need to lock in your focus on day one.

I appreciate your interest in engineering and wish you the very best as you explore your future career.

Dan’s Answer

I am recently retired however I still hope my answer is useful.

a. Interviewee name: Dan Wolf

b. Interviewee’s specific degree: BSEET (Electrical Engineering Technology) and MS in Engineering Management

a. Please describe your engineering field: Electrical Engineering focused on embedded microprocessor control of products. The EE field is very diverse and my experiences were just a small part of the available EE careers.

b. What is your current job title? Over the course of my career: Electrical Engineer, Software Engineer, Engineering Manager, Safety and Quality Engineering Manager. (also a part-time evening engineering instructor over the entire course of my 40 year working career).

c. Please describe your particular job and duties. Over the course of my career: Embedded Microprocessor projects including: strip-chart recorders, flow meters, pay-phone systems, weighing and shipping systems, steel and aluminum tracking solutions, freight train braking systems and mass transit control systems. Note that for a time, I was an engineering software consultant thus I was involved in many different industries for which I had no initial experience.

d. What is your average work schedule? Mostly 45 hour/week daytime although there were times I worked "around the clock", 80+ hour weeks and/or night-shift work (testing mass transit vehicles in the field). Working "overtime" (in excess of 40 hours/week) was common) and I was paid an annual salary, never hourly thus never paid for overtime.

e. Starting with high school, please describe your educational background chronologically. High School, and 4 years in the USAF then I earned a BSEET. When I was mid-career, I earned my MS in Engineering Management by attending evening classes.

f. Would you do anything differently if you had it to do over, related to your career or education? I approved my USAF training to be accepted as credit for my university analog electronic classes. Since these USAF classes weren't as detailed as the university classes, my knowledge of analog electronics was always weak. Since I always focused on digital electronics and software, it wasn't much of a handicap - but it would have been useful at times. Because of the ever changing technologies, I 100% enjoyed my career and would do it all again.

g. What advice would you give to me as someone interested in pursuing a career path similar to yours? I was (and still am) always learning on my own. Teaching college classes, reading technical articles and working on personal projects were things I was always doing. Self-development is essential and almost every engineer learns that the engineering fields are always changing so not keeping up with industry changes will eventually erode your career.

Have fun and good luck in your own career!

James Constantine’s Answer

Dear TJ,

Allow me to introduce you to James Constantine Frangos. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Chemistry and three postgraduate diplomas in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Public Health. Currently, he is employed at Home Programming.

James is an expert in designing nutrition education software aimed at reducing the prevalence of diet-related illnesses. His current role is a unique blend of a Dietitian, Nutritionist, and Programmer. His daily duties involve writing code using Microsoft Visual Studio 2022.

He often works more than 40 hours a week, sometimes even reaching 100 hours, showing his dedication and commitment to his work.

Starting from high school, James has an extensive educational background. He attended St. Peter's Lutheran College in Brisbane from 1972 to 1974. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Chemistry at Griffith University, Brisbane, from 1975 to 1977. In 1981, he completed a Master's Qualifying in Biochemistry at Queensland University, Brisbane.

He further enhanced his knowledge by obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Nutritional Medicine from the International College of Nutrition, Sydney, in 1982. He continued his education with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, in 1988. Lastly, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, in 2003.

Looking back, James contemplates that he might have pursued an IT degree in addition to his current qualifications. As advice for someone like you who is interested in a similar career path, James suggests getting an IT degree.

May God bless you!

Best regards,
JC.
