Great choice! A double major in Journalism and Finance can provide a strong foundation for a career in fashion journalism. This combination allows you to understand both the creative and business aspects of the fashion industry.
Key Considerations for Your Journalism Major:
Specializations: Look for journalism programs that offer specializations in fashion, media studies, or related fields. These programs can provide you with specific knowledge and skills relevant to your career goals.
Writing courses: Ensure that you take a variety of writing courses, including news writing, feature writing, and investigative reporting. Strong writing skills are essential for journalism.
Internships: Seek out internships with fashion magazines, online publications, or public relations firms to gain practical experience and build your network.
Multimedia skills: Consider developing skills in photography, videography, or graphic design. These skills can make you a more versatile and valuable asset in the fashion industry.
Key Considerations for Your Finance Major:
Business fundamentals: Make sure your finance curriculum covers core business concepts like accounting, economics, and marketing. These will provide a solid foundation for understanding the financial aspects of the fashion industry.
Financial analysis: Focus on courses that teach financial analysis, such as financial modeling and valuation. This knowledge will be essential for evaluating the financial performance of fashion brands and businesses.
Corporate finance: Consider taking courses in corporate finance to learn about capital budgeting, mergers and acquisitions, and risk management. This knowledge will be helpful for understanding the financial strategies of fashion companies.
Additional Tips:
Networking: Build relationships with professionals in the fashion industry through internships, networking events, and online communities.
Freelancing: Consider freelancing for fashion blogs or websites to gain experience and build your portfolio.
Portfolio development: Create a portfolio of your writing samples, photographs, or other creative work to showcase your skills to potential employers.
By combining your passion for fashion with strong journalism and finance skills, you can position yourself for a successful career in fashion journalism.

When majoring in journalism, there are several key factors to consider. First, explore the curriculum of the program—ensure it covers essential areas such as news writing, digital media, ethics, and investigative journalism. Look for opportunities to develop multimedia skills, as modern journalism often involves video, audio, and social media.
Second, consider internship opportunities and connections to media outlets. Strong programs offer real-world experiences and industry networking, which can be invaluable in launching your career.
Third, review the faculty’s expertise. Professors with professional backgrounds in journalism can provide insights and mentorship that can help you grow as a writer and reporter.
Fourth, understand the different specializations within journalism, such as sports, political, or broadcast journalism. Tailoring your education to your interests will give you a competitive edge.
Finally, think about the financial aspect. Investigate scholarships, grants, and whether the program offers part-time or freelance opportunities to help fund your studies.
Considering all these factors will help you make an informed decision and find a program that aligns with your goals and passions.

In terms of academic offerings, make sure you get introductory courses in writing, visual, sound and web software and hardware, and then, specialize - take more courses - in the production skills you enjoy.
Also, internships are a must. We require two in our major requirements, as well as six hours of hands-on production outside of coursework.
Make sure you are creating media products that you can proudly showcase to potential employers.
Look for career building and networking opportunities as well, such as joining professional media organizations as a student member (cheaper and easier to access).
Be present on social media, in places like LinkedIn and other sites.
