What dental assistant certification programs are available in NYC?

I'm a rising junior in High School instrested in dentistry, living in the Bronx, New York. I was wondering if there are any dental assistant certification programs that I can participate in and gain experience while still being in High School.

Thank you comment icon Good morning and best of luck as you embark on this journey. I have no idea about Dental Assisting schools in NY. However, just one thing to look for. Make sure whatever school you choose is accredited with the American Dental Association (ADA) . I've been in this career for over 50 years. It's been extremely rewarding. I wish you all the best. Hello, Ama !

This is such a wonderful question and I am proud of you for your ambition !

You will not be able to enroll in a Dental Assistant Program until you have graduated High School with your High School Diploma. After High School, you would enroll in a Dental Assistant Program at either The New York School for Medical and Dental Assistants or Edso Dental Assistant Training Center. New York University College of Dentistry does not have a Dental Assistant program but they offer courses in dental science. Through dental assistant programs, you can go for a certificate which would take 6 to 15 months or an Associates Degree which takes two years.

You will need to go through one of these programs in order to get your Certification.

Some of the courses that you will be taking within a Dental Assistant Program to prepare for dental assistance would be anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. You may want to prepare yourself by taking high school anatomy. Take as many human sciences in high school that you can. Try not to worry about not having dental experience right now. You will learn everything you need in the Dental Assistance Program after high school. There doesn't seem to be any activities in NYC for people in your age range. I would suggest that the closest thing you can do would be to volunteer at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at 125 Worth Street in Manhattan or try these places : Bronx Health Link, Inc, Montefiore Dental Department, NYC Health Hospitals Lincoln, and BronxCare Health System in the Bronx. Doing volunteer work will be valuable no matter where the opportunity is.

I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best !
