Hello Joanna!
Getting Better at Art: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Practice Regularly To improve your drawing skills, it is essential to practice consistently. Set aside time each day or week dedicated solely to drawing. This could involve sketching from life, drawing from photographs, or experimenting with different styles and techniques. The more you draw, the more you will develop your hand-eye coordination and understanding of form.
2. Study the Fundamentals Understanding the basics of art is crucial for any aspiring artist. Focus on mastering fundamental concepts such as:
Line: Experiment with different types of lines (thick, thin, curved, straight) and how they can convey emotion or movement.
Shape: Learn how to break down complex objects into simple shapes to make them easier to draw.
Value: Study light and shadow to create depth in your drawings. Practice shading techniques using pencils or charcoal.
Color Theory: Familiarize yourself with color mixing and the color wheel to understand how colors interact.
3. Analyze Other Artists’ Work Look at the work of artists you admire and analyze their techniques. Pay attention to their use of color, composition, and style. Try recreating some of their pieces as a way to learn new methods and approaches.
4. Take Classes or Workshops Consider enrolling in art classes or workshops in your area or online. These can provide structured learning environments where you can receive feedback from instructors and peers. Websites like Skillshare or Coursera offer various courses tailored for different skill levels.
5. Seek Feedback Share your artwork with friends, family, or online communities (like DeviantArt or Instagram) that focus on art critique. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement that you may not notice on your own.
6. Keep a Sketchbook Maintain a sketchbook where you can freely express ideas without the pressure of creating a finished piece. Use it for doodles, studies, and brainstorming new concepts. This practice encourages creativity and experimentation.
7. Explore Different Mediums Experiment with various mediums such as graphite, ink, watercolor, acrylics, or digital tools like tablets and software programs (e.g., Adobe Photoshop). Each medium has its unique properties that can enhance your artistic expression.
8. Set Goals Establish specific goals for your artistic development—whether it’s completing a certain number of drawings per month or mastering a particular technique by a set date. Goals give you direction and motivation.
9. Stay Inspired Surround yourself with inspiration by visiting galleries, reading art books, watching documentaries about artists, or following art-related content online (like YouTube channels focused on art tutorials). Keeping inspiration alive will fuel your passion for drawing.
10. Be Patient and Persistent Improvement takes time; be patient with yourself as you progress through challenges in learning new skills or techniques. Persistence is key—don’t get discouraged by setbacks; instead, view them as opportunities for growth.
By following these steps diligently while maintaining a positive attitude towards learning and creativity, you’ll find yourself improving over time on your journey to becoming an artist.

Hello, Joanna! It’s great to hear about your interest in Arts. It was the same for me, and I'd be happy to offer some guidance. Starting a career in art can be a rewarding and fulfilling journey, but it can also be challenging to know where to begin. Everyone’s journey is different, but here are a few tips to help you get started.
Fundamental Drawing Skills: Start with mastering the basics, such as drawing shapes, shading, and perspective. Practicing these fundamentals will improve your overall technical skills and accuracy. Starting with the basics and fundamentals is a good way to build a strong foundation of knowledge.
Anatomy and Proportions: Study human or animal anatomy to understand proportions and movement. This can help you draw figures, and dynamic poses.
Artistic Techniques: Experiment with different techniques and mediums, such as watercolor, acrylics, or digital tools. Each medium offers unique challenges. For example, as a 3D artist, I would need to master certain tools and techniques dedicated to creating three-dimensional work. Find that best suits your style and interests.
Composition and Design: Learn the principles of composition, including balance, contrast, and focal points. Understanding how to arrange elements within your artwork will make your pieces more visually balanced and appealing.
Color Theory: Study color theory to understand how colors interact, create mood, and convey meaning. This knowledge will help you make more informed choices in your artwork.
Pursuing your dream as an artist will involve continuous learning and growth. You can take art classes, workshops, or online courses to learn more about them. I recommend checking out Proko, David Finch, and BaM Animation on YouTube. Keep honing your skills and stay inspired!

I live in New York City, and there is a place near me where I have done life drawing. I would bring my large and my charcoals, there will be a nude model posing. I highly recommend finding something like that in your area. It will get your juices flowing and give you the opportunity to practice what you want to do.
Rock on! And take your charcoals or pencils and a pad to a local park and draw. Then draw some more and then after that draw more
I live near Carnegie Hall. And the joke is “ how do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The answer is practice practice practice.
Keep practicing! It will serve you well.

Hello Joanna,
Let's revisit a timeless lesson from our school days: Always treasure the work you do, regardless of how you perceive the quality of your art. Remember, it's your passion that fuels excellence, be it in art or any other domain! Instead of being overly harsh on yourself, maintain an open mind and embrace feedback from others. Use their perspectives as stepping stones for your growth as you continuously refine your style and technique, carving out your unique space.
Let the styles and techniques of other artists inspire you, but never lose touch with your own authenticity as you develop your portfolio. This is your personal journey of self-discovery, so there's no need to rush. Enjoy the journey and always remember that you're engaging in what you love.
Remain receptive to opportunities as you chart your artistic aspirations. You'll encounter resources that will illuminate various paths, guiding you towards a career in art or illustration. Remember, true success lies in following your heart and living your passion. This will be the driving force propelling you towards the career you've always wanted!
When you encounter setbacks, don't let them deter you. Persistence and determination will navigate you in the right direction. Keep exploring your ambitions, invest the necessary effort, and you'll find yourself gradually moving closer to your goals. Wishing you nothing but the best on your artistic journey!
