what do you do as an auto mechanic besides just replacing parts off cars?

I'm a junior in highschool, and I'm very fascinated by cars and mechanics. I have a few favorite car brands such as, Honda, Koenigsegg, Porsche, Toyota, and Mazda.

My best answer would be, you're a combo of doctor & detective to cars. You have to be curious on what is going on with the vehicle & what caused it to have this problem it can in for. You have to be humble enough to ask for help & listen to those who give you an answer. If you think you know everything don't be a mechanic. I've been doing this for 40 years & are learning. You have to mind not reading & doing research because things change pretty much every year & every car line. On a good note, you can do things that most can't. Hope this helped.

Artan’s Answer

As an auto mechanic, much more is involved than just replacing parts. Here are some key tasks:

Diagnosing Problems,
Preventive Maintenance,
Testing and Inspecting Vehicles,
Troubleshooting Electrical Systems,
Repairing Systems,
Advising Customers,
Upgrading and Customizing Vehicles,
Maintaining Tools and Equipment.

The work of an auto mechanic requires critical thinking, knowledge of different car systems, and hands-on technical skill.

Hassan’s Answer

The hardest part of the job can be finding the part that needs to be replaced. So understanding how parts work together is vital. That way you can troubleshoot what's failing correctly. On older cars that may need to be done with simple test equipment like voltage meters etc. On modern cars, it's often done via computer that has the right software to read the car's computers. Hence, mechanics need to become more computer savvy since newer cars may have multiple computers and electronic modules that work together. Even on non-electric cars, many things are electric rather than just mechanical. So having a deeper understanding of electronics maybe required.
