The average earnings for a hairstylist in the United States can vary based on factors such as experience, location, type of salon, and whether the stylist is self-employed.
As of 2023, the median annual wage for hairstylists, hairdressers, and cosmetologists was around $29,670, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, the earnings can range:
Top 10% of earners: Over $50,000 annually.
Bottom 10% of earners: Around $20,300 annually.
Hairstylists in upscale salons, high-demand cities, or those with a strong clientele base often earn more, especially when tips and commissions are factored in. Stylists who own their salons or rent a booth space also have the potential to earn significantly more, depending on their business success.

if you rent a chair you cover the cost of the rental then the rest if yours to keep. If you work for a percent keeping up to 40% the owner keeps the rest. Or you could be salary base with possible benefits. But if you open your own shop after the expenses the rest of the revenue is yours. the question is do you want to work for someone or be your own boss? Do you want to specialize or be a generalist ? you can make anywhere from 30-150K a year. pending on how you want to work. But most important of all you have to naturally be a people person. You will depend on tips and repeating business.
