Lawyer salaries can vary widely depending on location, skill level, and years of experience. It really depends if you want to be a public defender , corporate lawyer, work inhouse, eventually be a judge. You also don't have to practice law, you can have a JD and work in other industries including the academia. but if you want to practice you need to have an active license by the state. Emily’s Answer

Hey there John,

The answer to your question is based on a variety of factors.

The type of law practiced is one of the factors. For example patent attorneys make an average of $180,000, while public defenders make an average of $63,000. So it depends on what type of law you are wanting to go in to!

Location is also an important factor! Where do you live? Do you plan on moving to a different state? These are things to consider asking yourself to determine if this career is for you.
The highest-paying areas for lawyers include San Jose, CA, San Francisco, CA, Washington, DC, and New York, NY to name a few.

Experience also can affect the salary. Starting salaries and opportunities for advancement can vary based on experience. The more experience you have in practicing law, the more money you can make, just like many other jobs!

In 2022, the median salary for lawyers was $135,740, with the top 25% making $208,980 and the bottom 25% making $94,440.

I hope I was able to be of some assistance to you!

Hello John, you've posed an excellent question! As others have pointed out, the answer varies depending on the branch of law and geographical area. Your law school and academic performance also play a significant role. It's crucial for you to carefully consider the financial implications of law school and the potential debt you might accrue. Remember, not every lawyer secures a high-paying job. Don't forget to factor in the opportunity cost - the potential earnings you might miss out on by attending law school.

Wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, John !

No one can tell you what your salary would be as a Lawyer because there are way too many variables as Advisor Emily has pointed out. A career should not be chosen based on what someone else's annual income is. A better approach would be to follow your dream career, whatever field of work you feel passionate about.

Salary statistics are inaccurate because, first and foremost, it takes seven years to become a Lawyer. Any salary quotes you get right now are from a couple of years ago or last year, from a small group of people, which would not help you in any way seven to eleven years from now (depending on what grade you are currently in). So judging a career by what people made years ago is not going to help you. You have to have a deep interest in government and the law in order to be a lawyer. You also have to start exploring an understanding about what lawyers do if you haven't already done so. You also need to be interested in having superb communication skills, both written and verbal and enjoy public speaking. So to base any career on what a salary is two years ago or today, is not going to be helpful to you.

Another reason why someone should avoid basing a career on internet salary statistics is because you never know how your life will be when you start working as a Lawyer. Lawyers do a lot of side gigs other than counsel and represent people in and out of the courtroom. They write for trade journals, sit on panels and Boards of agencies or companies, some teach and that is extra salary, so there is no way to figure out how much you personally will make until you are in the career.

The sure way you will know what your income will be is when you become a Lawyer and interview for positions. The employer would tell you what the salary is for that position and if it is not acceptable to you, you don't have to take the position. That's really how it works. Especially such a career as law where the workplaces and types of law are so diverse, it's best to wait till you are in the interviewing stage to see what employers are offering. Another variable would be if, when you graduate, you are able to open your own office or go in as a partner in an existing law office. You'd meet many contacts once in law school, so it's best to go the path and let things unfold the way they will if you want to become a Lawyer.

I just wanted to give your this perspective because it may be something for you to think about rather than quick number figures of random salaries. Whatever career you go into, put your whole heart and mind to it first and good things will come your way. Best wishes in all you do !
