I want to start making music. Does anybody know any free software I could use??

I like playing along to songs with the instruments that I have but I want to start making music. I was wondering if there's any free software I could use to see if I want to pursue making music.

Thomas’s Answer

If you use MacBooks or other apple computers, use GarageBand. If you use windows, use CakeWalk. If you don't like either of those, use Bandlab. I may be missing a few good free ones, but your main goal should be saving for a paid software. The best of those that I can recommend are Logic (I use Logic lol), Ableton, Reaper, and Pro Tools. Though you could also use FL Studio.

Hi Alex!

I recommend using Reaper, a powerful software for recording and editing audio. It’s very versatile and fits a variety of needs, from music production to voice recordings. If you need any help with the program, feel free to reach out. I’m here to assist you.

Best,
Mauricio

James Constantine’s Answer

Hi Alex!

MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a fascinating system that boasts 128 distinct instruments, 128 pitches, and 128 volume levels. I encourage you to dive deeper into this subject by visiting this site: PDFDrive. Here's the link: https://www.pdfdrive.com/search?q=midi&pagecount=&pubyear=&searchin=&em=

A couple of decades ago, I had the pleasure of exploring MIDI in VB6 and even developed a comprehensive music platform. If you're interested in seeing my work, I've recorded some of it on YouTube.Studio back in 2014. Here are the links to those recordings:

Have a look at https://sourceforge.net/directory/midi/visual-basic-.net/?os=windows

May God bless you!
JC.
Thank you comment icon Hi James! The links to your YT do not work (I believe you are sending us to the studio to make our own video instead of the actual video). Could you please edit and add in the correct video links? Gurpreet Lally, Admin
Thank you comment icon Hi Gurpreet, The YT links work for me so it must be the web. I am sending you guys to adjudicate my work, not compile your own, though you may want to do that later. JCF James Constantine Frangos

Nikola’s Answer

Cakewalk is a free DAW software that will help you make music faster. Other than than you can use REAPER, it is very cheap and has a 60 day trial period. The downside of REAPER is the lack of stock virtual instruments. REAPER is better if you have an audio interface and can record yourself playing live instruments.
