Where to find motivation and zest for learning?

Over the past month, my motivation has totally disappeared. It just hit me out of nowhere and I have no idea why. When I try to study, I don't even want to open my books. I just feel completely drained of energy. How to overcome this learning block?

Thank you comment icon A good way to motive yourself is go back to school. It is going to cost you some money but you should try it again. Chauvion Moore

Julianna, first and foremost, you get back that zest by being kind and patient to yourself. Adding pressure will make it worse. These expectations that make you strive for something that isn’t fair to yourself only makes it worse.

Now grab a pen and a piece of paper, this is an old school trick I’ve used over the years. You’re about to make a list…

1) why did you start in the first place? Go back to the beginning and remember what made you want to start. Was it for a career? Was it expectations? Was it because you’re studious and like to study?

2) what happens if you just never open another book? If you stopped studying right now, how bad is it? You won’t get that job. You wasted time and money. You have to start over. You have to figure out a plan b. Make a list.

3) what do gain from pushing through? What do you get or earn if you continue? (This is not what you want, but what is likely to happen) this is fact or presumable outcome.

4) now what is it you want? Realistically! What would you like? Do you get it by quitting or do you get it by pushing through? This is more of a long term question. Saying “right now I would like it to be easy” isn’t fair. You need to think 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, down the road.

Once it’s written down, read it again. Did it help? I do suggest you do this with a friend or family member. This helps with accountability.

Best or luck!! You got this!

Doc’s Answer

Julianna,
You are facing the same challenges, so many others are in this chaotic world. There is no simple solution because you are you and what may help another may not help you. The most important thing to keep in mind is there are no more yesterdays, just todays and tomorrows. You have to be happy with yourself, believe in yourself before you will be happy with others. Look in that mirror and consider what a great person you are, what great things you can do for yourself and others. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. Wake determined to be the best you can be. Go out and commit a random act of kindness. Connect with an old friend you haven't in years. Write a note to yourself and post it on your bathroom mirror that reads, "I am me, there is no one else like me. This is my day and I will succeed in making it the best I can!" Girl, you've got this!

Thank you comment icon If you have access to Spotify, Pandora< Apple Music, Amazon Music or I-tunes. Search for D O C & Co and pull-up "Just Be You" a song I wrote for a young friend who was dealing with trying to figure life out. It may speak to you, too. Never give up on your dreams. One day at a time! Is there something else bothering you? Do you have a overall plan to resolve? If not, how can you make it a little better each day or make peace with it? Any health checks needed? Organize studying into blocks and lead it to a reward, watch a show, treat, see friends, etc. Getting enough sleep? Working out? Even a walk to 15 minutes of exercise a day makes you feel more accomplished and powerful by checking an easy item off the list :). Good luck!
Thank you comment icon I will use this advice as I prepare for my career. Julianna
