John’s Answer

In all seriousness, before you even look at educational programs like GMC, Ford certifications, etc. I would just work at a simple oil lube and tire shop for a few months. Or ask a small repair shop if you could shadow them part-time. You might find you don't like working on passenger cars, but do you like trucks or heavy equipment or diesel?

Craig’s Answer

Well to get your feet wet & see if you are really interested in this industry & your age, get a job cleaning s shop up. Some call then porters at some shops. You will see what mechanic do every day, not just the cool stuff you as seen online or tv. Maybe work as a helper to one of the people in the shop. If you decide you like doing this kind of work & don't mind getting dirty, take the next step. If in high school take auto shop if it's offered & keep working in the shop part time. If you're out of high school, look at tech. school or talk to dealers about getting involved in a manufacture training program like GM, Ford, Toyota, BMW. As I said before try getting a job in a shop doing what you can to see if you like it. Good luck

Benjamin’s Answer

Explore your local schools and see if they provide any automotive courses. If none are available, don't worry! You can always turn to online education. Additionally, you might want to reach out to nearby shops and inquire about any internship programs they might have. Remember, every step you take brings you closer to your goal!

Hello,
To begin a career as an auto mechanic, here is how to get started:

1. High School Education or Equivalent
In high school, pay close attention to classes like mathematics, physics, and automotive repair or shop. It is good to understand how the basic principles of a machine work.

2. Research Automotive Programs
Check with local community colleges, vocational schools, or technical institutes that offer programs in automotive technology. Some schools offer specialized training that focuses on specific areas of expertise, such as engine repair or electronic systems.

3. Attend a Training Program
The majority of aspiring mechanics enter an accredited program in auto repair, which can be either 6 months or up to 2 years in duration. Programs like those mentioned above are examples of those offered by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.

4. Gain Practical Experience
As you study, be on the lookout for any available opportunity that gives you hands-on experience. Besides attending classes, seek part-time jobs in a nearby automobile repair shop and get professional experience with mechanics. Certain schools often partner with automobile shops where students can participate in internships.

5. Certifications
The Automotive Service Excellence ASE certification is perhaps the most critical accreditation for any mechanic. First, get ASE certified in the basic areas of brake, suspension, and electrical systems, among others, and work your way up to Master Technician. The ASE tests the candidate's theoretical knowledge, including practical experience.

6. Specialize if Desired
You can specialize in a type of vehicle, such as diesel engines or hybrid cars, or in a luxury brand. Another specialization could be in one or more systems, such as transmission and electronics. These specialized mechanics are sought after more and can command high salaries.

7. Keep Your Skills Updated
Automobile technology is constantly evolving with electric and hybrid cars. Continuing education and keeping your knowledge updated about new technologies will maintain the present value of your skillset.

Follow these steps, and you will be well on your way to becoming a successful auto mechanic. Which would you prefer: general mechanics or specializing in performance cars or electric vehicles?

Good Luck
Thank you comment icon I'm excited to put your great advice to good use! Jeremiah

Ryan’s Answer

Get a part time job at a local tire and lube shop. If you like it I recommend going to a community college that offers automotive repair.
You can qualify for fasfa grants. If you want to go to trade school expect expensive tuition but more focused hands on education.
