Every response has been fantastic! Here's an encouraging 4-step roadmap for a student aiming to become a cybersecurity maestro:

1. Lay Solid Groundwork (Year 1-2)
Immerse yourself in the essentials of computer science, with a focus on networking, operating systems, and coding. Get acquainted with the rudiments of security, encryption, and networking protocols.

2. Acquire Real-World Experience (Year 3)
Get your hands dirty with cybersecurity tools like Wireshark, Nmap, and others, and establish your own home lab. Engage in online challenges or contests such as CTFs (Capture the Flag) to test your mettle.

3. Obtain Certifications & Explore Specializations (Year 4-5)
Chase after recognized certifications like CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), or CISSP to boost your professional standing. Delve into specializations such as penetration testing, cloud security, or threat intelligence to broaden your expertise.

4. Foster Connections & Lifelong Learning (Ongoing)
Be a regular at cybersecurity conferences, participate in forums, and keep abreast of new threats. Seize internships or entry-level positions to hone practical skills and cultivate valuable relationships.

Chinyere’s Answer

Hello Victoria,

To pursue a career in "computer networking" or "cybersecurity", follow these general steps:

1. Gain Foundational Knowledge
- Learn the basics of computer science: Understanding how computers and networks function is key. Begin with basic networking concepts, protocols, and services (like TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTP).
- Study Operating Systems: Familiarize yourself with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS, as you will need to know how these systems operate in a networked environment.
- Explore Cybersecurity Basics: Learn about encryption, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and how to protect data and networks from unauthorized access.

2. Pursue Relevant Education
- Get a degree in related fields: A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or cybersecurity will provide a solid foundation.
- Alternatively, you can start with certificates or associate degrees in network administration, information security, or a related field.

3. Obtain Certifications
For both networking and cybersecurity, industry-recognized certifications are important. Start with:

Networking Certifications:
- CompTIA Network+: Entry-level certification that covers basic networking concepts.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA): A well-recognized networking certification.
- Juniper Networks Certification: If you're working with Juniper systems.

Cybersecurity Certifications:
- CompTIA Security+: A good starting point for entry-level cybersecurity jobs.
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH): For those who want to learn about penetration testing and ethical hacking.
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP): For advanced security professionals.

4. Hands-On Practice
- Set up your lab: Use virtual machines and networking equipment (routers, switches, etc.) to simulate networks and test your knowledge.
- Work on projects: Build your networks, configure security settings, or try ethical hacking on test networks to practice skills.

5. Build Experience
- Internships: Look for internships in IT departments, networking, or cybersecurity roles.
- Entry-level positions: Start as a help desk technician, network administrator, or security analyst to gain hands-on experience.

6. Stay Updated
- Join communities: Engage with online forums, attend webinars, and follow professionals in the networking and cybersecurity field.
- Continuous Learning: As technology evolves, regularly update your skills and knowledge by taking advanced courses or obtaining higher-level certifications.

7. Explore Specializations
- Networking: You can specialize in network design, implementation, or maintenance, or work as a network engineer or administrator.
- Cybersecurity: Explore roles like penetration tester, security consultant, forensics expert, or incident responder.

Remember, both computer networking and cybersecurity are rewarding fields with growing demand. By combining education, practical experience, and a passion for technology, you can build a successful career in either area.

Best wishes!

E’s Answer

Hi Victoria!

In addition to what Chinyere mentioned, there is nothing better than taking all that foundational knowledge and putting it to practice. You can create a lab environment using virtual machines and then begin to put the book knowledge into practice. Really understanding how a network works and how operating system work is very helpful.

If college is not an option for you, I suggest starting with books and Youtube courses, there are plenty of those that you can find online. You can start building your cert path by leveraging the free cert from ISC2 linked below. I hope this helps!

E recommends the following next steps:

Start by getting a free cert here https://www.isc2.org/landing/1mcc

Steve’s Answer

Hey Victoria - Some great advice here already! I'd like to add that the Cyber Security is great field to get into as I myself found my way into this wide open career field after working in IT support. Understanding the fundementals of networking is the key -- Operating systems, cloud operations are also important. Chinyere gave some good examples of where to start and expand. Cyber Security builds on this knowledge and will lead you into a career whatever interests you.. One other thing to think about is that in Cyber Security is that there a lot of opportunites that you won't find in other fields and that may come with certain corperations funding to further your education in this field to remain on top of all the changes.
