Nicole’s Answer

Hi Monica M. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

I would encourage a few things...1) be in the moment. It is hard to focus on the overall greatness that being on a college campus can bring. There generally is so much going on...and so much to take in. Do your best to engage and build those memories. 2) Work hard. After all, we go to college to graduate and contribute to our own individual growth so take every class seriously and be intentional about doing /giving your best effort. 3)Make friends. For a lucky many, best friendships can be build through the time spent in your college years.

Hope you find these tips helpful. Best of luck to you!

Austin’s Answer

Great question Monica!! If I had the knowledge that I have now going into my first year of college, I would tell myself a few things:

  1. Start planning now for life after college. Gain experience, get internships, look for opportunities to grow, learn new skills etc. Four years may seem like a long time, but it really isn't; you don't want to be a second semester senior with no battle plan for life after your graduate.
  2. Call your parents, don't have to have them call you. Your parents are genuinely curious about how you are doing, how you are, friends you have made, and the classes you are taking. Keeping them in the loop is the right thing to do, and you don't want your mom yelling you for not having called in two months.
  3. Breathe, don't stress the small stuff. There will be lots of little assignments and it isn't worth your time nor your tears to stress about over the little things. It isn't the end of the world if you fail a 5 point quiz, just use it as a learning experience. This does not mean that you should blow things off by any means; do your work, try your best, and don't turn in assignments late...but breathe and approach your school work with perspective.

I could go on, but I hope this helps.
