Andrea’s Answer

The most helpful class that I took was Sociology. I actually started out with a different major and ended up changing to Sociology as a result of this class. But the reason it was the most useful was because this professor taught me how to study. it was all about taking information, gleaning the important facts, noting relevant highlights and being able to discuss in an intelligent manner various outcomes. It was absolutely the most useful and relevant class for me, because I have a photographic memory and did not have to study in high school. I recommend everyone take a college preparedness class. .

There are so many awesome courses to take in college. A course that was very helpful for me as a freshmen who was not sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, was an exploratory course (career planning class) to all the majors available in the university. This class really helped me to explore all the various fields, degrees and potential jobs. Having the overall overview and class discussion along with guest speakers who had the various degrees truly helped me narrow down my interests and ultimately select the right program for me. Here is an example of a career development course:

The best class I took was public speaking. We had to present numerous times during the course of 18 months, and the feedback I received from my professor each time was invaluable. From knowing your audience to knowing your body language and tone, it helped prepare me for management-level positions and the ability to speak more effectively with leadership.

Do I have to narrow it down to one?

I can think of a few, in no particular order:

1) Latin and Greek in English: It taught me the true origins of a lot of our everyday words, and the Latin and Greek roots from which they derive. Also helpful in Law and Medicine.

2) Logic: it was different, interesting, and helped me to hone my analytical thinking skills

3) Constitutional Law: not because of the subject matter, but because the professor treated us like first year law students. He was very demanding. We had to research cases prior to class, and be prepared for him to call on us in class, at which time, we had to stand up and explain the case, and be prepared to answer his questions. For the final exams, he gave us hypothetical cases, and we had to rule on them as if we were the judge! Really built up my self-confidence!

4) Political Participation: Again, an awesome professor: Taught us about reality, mixed with a dose of idealism, and what it takes to effect change.

Interestingly, the first three were all in the first semester of my junior year, and I made B's in all of them. But the grades don't begin to tell the story of how much I learned. Seek out the challenging professors. In the end (many years from now!) you will be thankful that you did!

Jillian’s Answer

It wasn't the class, it was the professor. I felt like he was teaching me how to be an adult. I took 3-4 of his classes and almost had a minor in a totally different topic from my major but it was totally worth it. When you find someone/something you like, keep going and see what happens.

The best class I took in college was Business Law - for the class AND the Professor. I wasn't going to school to become a lawyer, I knew I'd go into a business field. It taught me a lot around contracts, restrictions and overall good business practices. My professor, as part of our final, made us do a mock interview and it was the real deal. I saw people walk into his office and walk out within 30 seconds as the interview started with us introducing ourselves and shaking his hand. If you shook his hand too hard, too soft, or didn't make eye contact, you'd have to reschedule your interview time. You had to make it through the entire interview successfully to pass his class - best real life training one can receive.

The most helpful courses I took in college where my communication classes. Even if you are not a communication major I recommend taking at least one communication course. The skills you learn are invaluable and can be transferable to many different fields and disciplines. Some of my favorite communication courses included Public Speaking, Persuasion, and Interpersonal Communication.
