Hello Esther!

How to Boost Your Career

1. Set Clear Goals
To effectively boost your career, start by defining clear, achievable goals. This involves identifying what you want to accomplish in both the short-term and long-term. Consider using the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—to structure your goals. For instance, if you aim to advance to a managerial position within five years, outline the skills and experiences needed to reach that target.

2. Enhance Your Skills
Continuous learning is crucial for career advancement. Identify the skills that are in demand in your industry and seek opportunities to develop them. This could involve taking online courses, attending workshops, or obtaining certifications relevant to your field. Platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning offer a variety of courses that can help you stay competitive.

3. Network Effectively
Building a strong professional network can open doors to new opportunities. Attend industry conferences, join professional organizations, and utilize social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with peers and leaders in your field. Networking can lead to mentorship opportunities and job referrals that may not be publicly advertised.

4. Seek Feedback and Mentorship
Regularly seek feedback from supervisors and colleagues about your performance. Constructive criticism can provide insights into areas for improvement that you might not have recognized on your own. Additionally, finding a mentor who has experience in your desired career path can provide guidance and support as you navigate your professional journey.

5. Gain Experience Through Volunteering or Internships
If you’re looking to switch careers or gain experience in a new area, consider volunteering or interning in relevant fields. These experiences not only enhance your resume but also allow you to build connections within the industry while demonstrating your commitment and passion for the work.

6. Personal Branding
Developing a personal brand is essential in today’s job market. This includes creating an online presence that reflects your professional identity through platforms like LinkedIn or personal websites showcasing your portfolio of work. Ensure that all public profiles are up-to-date with relevant information about your skills and experiences.

7. Stay Informed About Industry Trends
Keeping abreast of trends within your industry is vital for making informed decisions about career moves or skill development. Subscribe to industry publications, follow thought leaders on social media, and participate in webinars or discussions related to emerging trends.

8. Work-Life Balance
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important for long-term career success and personal well-being. Ensure that you allocate time for self-care activities outside of work which can help prevent burnout and keep you motivated.

By following these steps systematically, you can create a robust plan for boosting your career effectively over time.

Esther, you tagged engineering so I assume you work as an engineer of some sort. While I am not an engineer, I have some tips that are little universal. These things are all very basic but some how they are forgotten all too often.

1. Never be late. It’s crazy I have to say this but it’s so simple. Even in my work at JPMorgan. People show up 5-10 mins late almost every day. I’m not saying you have to be the first one in and the last one out. But you need to be on time and consistent.

2. Never say “that’s not my job.” No one care. Work harder. You need to be a team player. If YOU want to boost YOUR career don’t focus on just you, focus on the team as well. This will
Prove you’re a team player.

3. Be positive. Hurting the team culture is bad. Even if you are a star performer. If you are negative, you will never make it as far as if you were positive.

4. Be humble but be an expert. You need to know your field and your craft. Study. Learn. Improve yourself. But not just at work. Always get better. 1% everyday. You want to be someone others can go to because you’re great at what you do.

5. Be open minded. You will not be everyone’s favorite person and you always have room for improvement. So be open minded to that. You’ll get some feedback you may not like. Regardless, is there something you can learn from it.

Now all these things are fairly easy and straight forward but too many don’t even do this!

Now go get you a boost!!

Hi Esther, it's great to hear you have a desire to boost your career. If your goal is to gain a higher role/title or make more money, then the answer to both of these is simple; work hard and be diligent in learning your field. Many people have gone from the "ground floor" to the top by following these two steps. But I wouldn't call them "simple steps". It's going to take a lot of effort on your part to make sure your hard work is noticed and you're properly rewarded.

I personally used this strategy, by going from a minimum wage customer service position to becoming COO of my company. The process was long and arduous, but it pays off in the end if you're willing to grind it out. I made sure to make myself available and willing to take on any task, even if I had no experience or idea of what to do. The best advice I learned was something my old boss told me during my 2nd week on the job; "Google it." You have to believe in yourself and know that anything can be learned or achieved if you apply yourself. Good luck and I hope my advice provided at least a little bit of guidance.

I'll say one thing. Networking. Networking is one of the single most important things you can do. This is not praising platitudes or inane complimentary phrases. Get out there and be visible to everyone. Try to be everyone's SME and SPOC (subject matter expert and single point of contact) be that person they know they can come to with ANYTHING and that you'll solve that problem or through your networking know someone who has the solution. When it comes time to move up you'll have the support from all those contacts you've made.

Take courses in as many discplines/subjects as you can. Develop diverse interests. Engage in sports or join clubs. Engage socially with other people with different backgrounds. Employers look for employees who have a range of skills to go along with what they specialize in.
