I'm a Paul Simon Job Corps student, is there any tips or advice for the painting trade?
its my 3rd day here and we start our trades in 3 weeks.

It's wonderful that you are in the Painting Pre-Apprentice Program at your Job Corps ! I think that you will find the training useful throughout your whole life ! I would be happy to share information and advice about being a House and Commercial Property Painter !
Living in Chicago, there will be a lot of opportunity for you once you are finished with the program. Something I would advise is to protect your hands always because you will be doing all of your work with your hands. Also think about a fitness routine that you are able to do everyday, because physical strength and stamina will be important in this career. If you do not already have one, get your drivers license as you will need it upon completion of the program. You may find some of the tasks a bit harder than others - for instance painting ceilings - so I would suggest offering to paint for people right now so that you can get used to it. Ask people in your neighborhood and people at faith based or any place you frequent if they need anything painted and volunteer your time. I know that sometimes older people would appreciate this. This will be a great help to people and build your experience as a painter. Just tell them if they buy the paint and supply the tools, you'll paint for them.
Research the various equipment used in painting and learn which tool is best to use in what instance. Experience using all types of paint, even chalk paint and learn how to do stucco even if it's on your own. Visit Painting Contractor websites and subscribe to trade magazines to keep up with what is happening in the trade. Be careful if you use any oil based paint commonly used to paint metal because I know someone who has adverse effects from the fumes. Wear protective gear when painting.
