Camera Techniques?

Are there any camera techniques (for RTF) that you would recommend for someone just getting started? or someone who just doesn't get along well with technology?

Hi Sidney,

This is an excellent question. Cameras today are basically computers. A cellphone's camera has more power than some of the computers in the early days of space exploration. You are studying RTF at a very exciting time because technology is changing so quickly. I have included a link to the Verizon website so you can see how one filmaker, Bryn Mooser, at RYOT, is changing how we create and curate film:

http://www.verizon.com/about/news/bryn-mooser-and-emmy-nominated-ryot

Bryn uses VR or virtual reality and a 360 camera to make you feel like you are at the film site and empathize with the journalist or storyteller. Film is a very powerful medium of expression - his method doesn't require massive amounts of money or post production. The article also talks about AR or augmented reality. This is another tool in your film tool kit.

Victoria recommends the following next steps:

Learn as much as you can about the technology behind digital media and consider combining STEM and RTF. You will get more comfortable with technology the more you use it so join a club or work with friends who know how to film, use equipment, and edit content. Then practice, practice, practice. I can't wait to see what you do!
Visit a Verizon store and try out some of the VR gear. Check out the film and see if it inspires you to create a mini film with your camera.
Consider volunteering at a non-profit that needs help filming a commercial, public service announcement or documenting an event. Work up to bigger projects.
Thank you comment icon Thank you for your advice, I can't wait to see what this kid did. Sidney
