Hello - that is a very broad question. It will depend on the type of engineer you are and what level of experience you have. An entry level software engineer can start at 60-70K / 12 months = $5400 pre-tax.

I can say that in Michigan, the monthly salary is about $7,900. Even though, I got this number from the below link, I can tell you that this is a very good average number. It will be about $10,000 or $15,000 lower for somebody right out of college today.

Hi Ann, it's great to hear you have a desire to educate yourself in the field of engineering. In regards to the compensation associated with being an engineer, there is no simple answer to that because it all depends on the field of engineering, the company you work for (and their location), and your education or level of experience.
For instance, an aerospace engineer can make over 120k (median) a year. But an electrical engineer will be somewhere around 100k a year. If you're looking for the highest paying engineering field, then a petroleum engineer would be your top choice. They can make upwards of 140k a year. But again, remember that these are all median salaries, as your actual salary will depend on all the factors I mentioned above. I would personally recommend you read up on each engineering field, then choose the field that interests you most. I say that because if you like what you do, you're likely going to perform better and thereby earn more money.

It really varies by State and even from a large city like Boston to a smaller suburb outside major cities. Also experience has a big impact on one's pay rate. I can tell you Engineers make good money, and a good engineer can make more than the average worker. What discipline also has an influence. You should get an education in an area that interests you for if you don't like what you do, you will have a miserable life even if the pay is good. I for one enjoy being a mechanical engineer in the food industry. I get to design equipment and processes and every project is different. After 20 years of experience I was earning $150,000 in New England.
