How important are internships before college?

I am going to college next year and I haven't done any internships yet. I plan on doing some during the summer after my freshman year. Do companies put emphasis on internships before college? #internships

Hi Avika,

It's great to see that you are interested in internships and plan on doing some while in college. Internships are a great way to explore a career in college in a low risk environment, great way to gain experience/expertise, as well as a good way to demonstrate that you're a hard worker and intelligent. I would say that you are definitely ahead of the curve in being concerned about internships as most companies that you will interview for after you graduate don't really care what you did in high school. By the time it came for me to apply for a full time job during my senior year, I had done so much that there was no way to include anything from my high school years. When you are 22/23 it would be kind of odd to include things from when you were 16 years old on your resume.

Furthermore any internships that could be done before college will not be anywhere near as substantive as those during your college years. Just think about it, a person who is 20 is much more valuable in an internship compared to someone who is 15. I would say that internships before college do not really have an impact on getting hired for a full time job as so much time will have passed where you will be able to do more substantive internships.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck in college!!

Best,

Austin

Avika to add to Austin’s advice, the great advantage to an internship is you get to see if you like that job/career. Sometimes your thoughts on what a role entails is different to reality. Internships are a two way street, gives you a chance to see if you like the company and if the company likes you. Good Luck!
