How do you look for internship and opportunities that will help me in the future?

I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and I"m unsure of what I want to do in the future. Are there any internships or activities that I can do that would be flexible to whatever career or major I pursue in the future?

Vlad’s Answer

Hi Kaitlynn, Any internship experience will be good experience and a good way to test the waters for a potential career in a field. Another way to get a glimpse into different career paths would be to job shadow. You can do this with just about any one, a good way to start is to ask a parent or a friend's parent if possible. As you get older, keep a lookout for early career programs. Many firms will have these early programs for Freshman and Sophomores in University, and they are another good, flexible way to learn more about different industries (and can lead to internships). Good luck!

Lynn’s Answer

Hello Kaitlin,

Your drive and ambition are truly inspiring! I understand that finding internships while still in high school can be a bit challenging as they are generally offered at the college level. But don't worry, there are still plenty of ways you can explore your career interests. Here are a few ideas:

1. Consider getting a part-time job related to your field of interest. For instance, if you're drawn to the idea of teaching, you might find working at an after-school daycare program a rewarding experience.

2. Volunteering is another great way to gain experience. If you're interested in animal sciences, for example, you could volunteer at a local animal rescue organization.

3. Don't hesitate to reach out to professionals in your desired field and ask if you could shadow them on the job. If you're considering a career in accounting, you could contact a local accounting firm and see if they'd allow you to observe their work for a day.

Remember, the important thing is to explore and discover what's out there waiting for you!

Wishing you all the best in your journey,

Lynn

Beverly’s Answer

Hello Kaitlyn,

I am so happy you are already thinking about internship opportunities in college and it's not too early to start!
My suggestion is to soak up all the information you can about your field of interest now and gain experience to see if this is really what you want. Any experience will teach you something useful.

I wish you success in your remaining high school years as you hone in on your college major.

Beverly recommends the following next steps:

Speak with people in your field of interest and ask what they like or dislike about their career.
Join clubs in your school that focus on your field of interest and participate in events they offer.
Consider a summer job shadow experience where you can walk along side of a professional in your chosen field.
Work on a research project with a local college or university and learn from the faculty and students.
Pick up a part-time job in the area you are seeking.
