How and where would I find internships specific to the career fields I'm interested in?

I've been interested in both the law and medical fields for a long time now. I've been debating between becoming things like a pediatrician or family physician, a detective, private investigator, or crime scene investigator/forensics. All of these specific fields would take a lot of schooling and training to get into and I want to be as sure as possible on which one I end up getting into. Volunteering and internships is the best way I could think of narrowing down these interests and going from interested in to knowing that's what I want to get into. The problem is I don't know how to do this or even know where to start. How would I even go about this? What would be the best way of finding out about opportunities like this? Where should I start looking? Do you have any other ideas regarding this? Thank you! #Undecided # Ready for the Future

This is a very good question and good job on wanting to find out about the field you're interested in through internships. Although I can't speak on law enforcement from experience, I can certainly share some information in regards to the medical field – I was a Corpsman (medic) in the military as well as a Medical Laboratory Technician for many years.

You're right, both the law enforcement and medical fields would require a lot of time invested in order to get the necessary education and start a career in either one.

So, where should you start? Here's what I think:

– Try to connect with local clinics or hospitals. Ask some friends or family about who might be in either field and see if you could do some shadowing or an informational interview (interviewing someone who holds a job in a field you're interested in).

– Check out local colleges/universities if any of them offers information sessions/meetings. These meetings go over their program to prospective students and usually have a Q&A at the end.

Good luck and let me know if you have additional questions!

Mike recommends the following next steps:

Reach out to local clinics, hospitals, individuals who hold jobs in either field you're interested in.
Check out local colleges/universities if they offer tours of information sessions about a program you have interest in.

Hi Shaila,

I would look at the web sites where you want to work. Some companies list their internships on their web sites. Then look at web sites of other companies where you can get some internships.
