How do you manage your work-life balance as a Lawyer?
Something that I want when I am older is to have a good work-life balance. I know it could be hard because Lawyers work long hours. How do you do it?

This is a great question, Brockton. The answers already given are very good. I'd like to add that one of the reasons that lawyers sometimes have a difficult time balancing their work is because lawyers often charge by the hour, which means that it can be easy for lawyers to value their worth by how much time they spend on their work, but it is healthier for lawyers to value their worth as lawyers by the quality of their thoughts and the advice they provide (which often do not take a lot of time to provide). No matter what career you pursue, it's important to realize that not every assignment requires staying late, and the person who stays late isn't always the one who does the better job. That mindset will help contribue to a healthier balance of work and personal life.

This is a great question, Brockton. In my experience, you have to choose parts of your personal life that you treat with just as much seriousness and dedication as you treat your career. Whether that is a family gathering you want to attend, an exercise class that is important to you, or a hobby you need to set time in the calendar for it and honor it. There is an expectation on law firms especially that you will cancel personal plans anytime they interfere with your job, and sometimes that is necessary, but not nearly as often as people do it.

I work in a tech company, and it's fair to say that I have a very demanding job. However, it presents an opportunity to consistently improve my work-life balance. While I’m not adding a lawyer’s perspective, I’ll share my personal thoughts.
What works for me is setting aside protected hours on my calendar and establishing clear team agreements. For work-life balance, it’s essential to take regular breaks, as the workday is more like a marathon than a sprint. It’s impressive how just a few minutes of rest can refresh our minds. I also encourage you to maintain a routine that helps you recharge—whether it’s exercise, meditation, or something else that works for you.
Additionally, companies today are increasingly aware that employees perform at their best when they are well-rested and energized. No one benefits from an exhausted workforce.
