What are possible jobs for a self-help writer?

Hi, I like to read and write a lot of spiritual/self-help books. I was hoping people could give me ideas about related jobs I could get in these fields, both writing and not writing related.

I am interested in jobs where I don’t need any extra degrees. And if anyone is hiring, please reach out!

Hello, Len !

If you are a writer, that is the career, however it would benefit you very much to obtain a degree in a subject that you are interested in. College will sharpen your writing skills, bring you into contact with important contacts, provide personal growth, expose you to the writer community and teach you everything you need to know to publish your work. If you take a job where writing is one of the job duties, you will have to choose something that you're interested in. Do you already have one degree because you stated that you don't want any "extra" degrees.

There are no publishing jobs that specifically only deal with self-help books, you'd have to be involved with various genres of books if you work for a publishing house as an Editor. You could also consider going for Life Coach training and Certification as you favor the Self-Help genre. A degree and certifications will give credibility to your work as a writer. Think about what you want to do and set mini-goals that will qualify you and put you in the forefront for exactly what you want to do. Do you want to be a freelance writer or work for a company that tells you what to write ? You will need to have a collection of your writing to apply for jobs as a writer.

Some positions you can consider if you want to work for a publishing company are Administrative, Production, and Customer Service. You might want to start making contacts now, getting to know people in the publishing business. Decide how versatile you are right now and how versatile as a writer you want to be. Subscribe to trade magazines such as The Writer for information and possible projects. Do a search on line for writer websites and communities. You can also consider working for a newspaper and their website. There is a high level of applicants for the career choices you have mentioned, so any advanced education would help you along even though you may not want it as you've mentioned. You will need to get out there, explore, go to San Francisco and discover any writer communities or publishers that may be there. Take active steps towards what you want to do to fulfill your career aim.

If you return here with more information about your qualifications, I would be happy to be more specific for you. Wanting something in the writing and self-help field but saying it could be writing or not writing related leaves a very wide open space, so I encourage you to ask more questions about it. The only thing that fits what it seems you want to do is to be a professional Writer and have some sort of psychology or social science education so that you can write the types of self-help articles and books which you've mentioned that you like.

Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best moving forward for an exciting career as a Writer or whatever comes your way !

Content marketing could be a great career for you! Content marketers develop and implement content strategies, write, and edit. You could seek out a content marketing role for a wellness-focused company so it aligns with your interest in self-help and spirituality. If you're just starting out, look for roles like "content marketing associate" or "content marketing specialist." Generalist marketing roles can be a great fit for you, too. I started as a generalist and became a content marketing manager after a few years of working.
