Beverly’s Answer

Hi Juwairiyah,

Good question and you are not alone. Many students are not sure of their career and going to college is a great way to learn about several different fields while taking various classes.
Many students like you begin at a local community college to take the foundational classes that fit into any major. The benefits is the cost, financial assistance available, dedicated professors, and familiar setting. Later you may learn about transfer opportunities either locally or out of state.

Beverly recommends the following next steps:

Consider starting at a community college where you can take either a General Studies or Liberal Arts major. These courses are the foundation for any field.
Speak with an advisor about different majors and the careers that correspond.
Work with the Career Center staff, attend workshops and programs in areas that interest you. Take the career profile assessments and speak with the staff to interpret the results.
You may discover a focus while taking certain classes. For example, if you are interested in local history and science, you may find a class in environmental science or the history of Connecticut as a Liberal Arts choice.
Speak with other students, professors and staff to find out what they do and why. Much learning takes place through relationships.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. The major in the college is usually the relevant subjects of the career you have interest.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc and identify the related careers
Eg if you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer music producer, etc
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor , school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
