Amber’s Answer
Hi Lydia,
I think what people do in their free time would depend on their interests, including lawyers. Some of my classmates who went on to practice at big law firms barely have any free time as they work long hours and on the weekends (a grim reality for a lot of lawyers). However, some are insanely good at time management or have the luxury of maintaining boundaries at work, so they are able to make time to pursue interests outside of work (e.g., traveling, having family time, etc.). I also know some attorneys who are very active in their community and would devote time to doing pro bono work and mentoring the next generation of young attorneys.
As an adult, having a healthy work-life balance can be very challenging especially if you're in the legal field. You'll just have to learn to prioritize different aspects of your life and make sure you're able to maintain your wellbeing.

Hello Lydia,
What an interesting question you asked! Lawyers often have demanding jobs, but they find various ways to relax and enjoy their free time. Here are some activities that many lawyers like to do outside of work:
1. Reading and Learning: Many lawyers enjoy reading novels, nonfiction, and sometimes even material related to their field, like recent case studies or legal commentary. Continuous learning helps them stay sharp.
2. Physical Exercise: Given the intense hours they work, lawyers often value exercise as a way to reduce stress. Many enjoy running, going to the gym, yoga, or even team sports.
3. Travel: Some lawyers like to take vacations when their schedules allow. Exploring new places is a great way for them to relax, especially after big cases.
4. Socializing and Networking: Since networking is key in law, lawyers often attend events, spend time with friends and family, or join legal or business associations to meet new people.
5. Hobbies and Creative Outlets: Lawyers often take up hobbies like painting, music, cooking, or writing as a way to express creativity and relieve stress. Some even start blogs or write for publications in their free time.
6. Community and Volunteering: Many lawyers give back to their communities through pro bono work or volunteering for causes they believe in, like environmental work, human rights, or animal welfare.
7. Watching TV or Films: Legal dramas or documentaries are often favorites, but many lawyers also enjoy light-hearted movies or shows to unwind.
Since you’re interested in law, it’s great to explore these activities! They can help you develop skills and also balance the demanding nature of a legal career.
Best wishes!

JOHN’s Answer
Hi, Lydia.
During my free time, I learned how to write screenplays.
My partner and I I sold our first effort to a Hollywood production company in a million dollar deal. It changed our lives.
Afterwards, we had free time to write others.
The key is to do what you love, in law or other careers or jobs, and the money will follow to help you satisfy your desire to live life to the fullest.
For, the decision to take up screenwriting changed my life. It was not a matter of fate, nor a matter of judgment about my past, nor choice about presently available options. It was a matter of deciding my answer to the fundamental issue each of us faces: "Since I must die someday, do I want to do ____ to fulfill my desire to live?" You fill in the blank with a description of a course of future action when you don't or cannot know the future.
Deciding is truly freeing.
Let me know if this resonates with you.
Thanks for your question.

Exactly the same things as 300 million other adults. In most cases, lawyers work 60-70 hrs per week, because the job requires twice as much thinking, reading, writing and meeting time as other professions do.
Hi Michael! Do you have any insight on work-life balance for Lydia?
