Hi Tihon,

I totally get where you’re coming from. The computer science job market can seem like a daunting place with all the competition, especially in a tech hub like San Francisco. However, there are several paths that might be less saturated and could offer good opportunities both now and in the future.

One area I’d suggest looking into is quality assurance (QA) or software testing. Although QA once had a reputation for being more of a "entry-level" position, its importance has dramatically increased with the rise of Agile methodologies and continuous integration practices. Companies are keen on hiring QA professionals who can automate tests and ensure that software meets customer requirements and standards. Learning tools like Selenium, TestRail, or even getting certified in software testing can really enhance your employability. This field often welcomes those with minimal experience who show eagerness to learn, making it a plausible entry point.

Additionally, consider roles in tech support or IT helpdesk positions. These might not be the first jobs that you think of when envisioning a career in computer science, but they can provide a solid foundation and invaluable experience. You get to work directly with customers and gain practical insights into the technology they use. As you grow in this role, you can pivot to other technical positions like systems administration or even cloud support as you build your skill set.

I hope these suggestions give you a clearer path into the computer science world!

Best wishes,

Aman

Luz Angela’s Answer

Good afternoon, greetings to my students. Computer science covers many fields of study, starting with the management of Office Automation, Web Development, Database Management, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and many others. Today, specialists in any of these areas are required in any company. They are respected, highly valued and super well paid, whether in the technical, administrative, professional or teaching areas. It will not be difficult to find a job and successfully work in one of these areas of IT. You must train yourself properly, if possible, at a university and, most importantly, develop constant practice of the topics and stay up to date, since this field evolves every day. Since you are passionate about IT and have knowledge of the subject, you can begin to work in the area that you are most confident in independently as a freelancer, online classes, web page creator, or get an internship in a company where the most important thing will be to gain practice and knowledge, while you are properly trained in other areas that are more requested by companies. Congratulations if you take it seriously, responsibly and with interest, today tomorrow is assured See you soon.

Hi Tihon,

Very good question! There are a lot of areas within the broad overview of Computer Science which are highly in demand, such as cyber security, big data and many other areas. To get a feel for the job areas in demand, you can do a search on Indeed.com and other job search sites. If you search for computer security, you will find a huge number of open opportunities! Most job search sites also provide lists of the most popular keywords for job postings as well as candidate searches. This gives you an idea as to which positions are in demand and the ones people are interested in.

If you head down a security path, there will always be a need for those skills and you can stay in that track for an entire career. However, most people change directions multiple times throughout their career so you are not locked in to one path., especially if you keep your skills current through continuing education. As an example, my career began as a large systems application programmer. From there, I moved into test engineering developing testers and software for PC motherboards and adapters. Next, I moved into firmware development and became a BIOS engineer. Next, I moved into academia and became a professor! Along the way, I helped design and develop hardware.

The most important things to do are to learn the basics. Then, get a job to get your resume set up. Most companies will let you move around to different groups to give you addition skills and knowledge.

Good luck and enjoy your journey!
