Annah’s Answer

Ebuka- first off, this is a choice. It may happen organically as you enter the workforce and continue to define your interests. It may be forced upon you by means of necessity. A career is typically something you do for the long term; you continue to develop skills over time, expand your duties, and hopefully your salary as well. It is more of a commitment than a job- something that might be short term with less emotional investment. This is the most basic definition. What is useful about having a career is that in a best scenario you will have growth opportunities, continuous learning, it will be something you find interesting, and you will reap other benefits as well such as health insurance, retirement, and other perks. In contrast, a job will have limited opportunity for professional and financial advancement. Sometimes people know exactly what they want to do in life- or have a rough idea of what field to enter. For others this may take much longer. For some, a career will be a means to an end- allowing them to provide for themselves and their family. For others, it may be more of a lifetime passion project providing ongoing inspiration. Life is unpredictable; but I will say from my own experience it helps to identify your core values. Values are what drive you as a person- what is most important to you. I attended college and studied fine arts. I entered the workforce not knowing how I might apply my education and fell into early childhood and family support for over a decade. I then left to enter graduate studies in clinical art therapy. I have had multiple jobs and a few careers so far. I learned it is important for me to work with people, I enjoy team environments, creativity, autonomy, and being in a helping role. All of these things I realized over time. I hope this gives you some ideas about what you might want to pursue! Best of luck in all your endeavors!

Hello Ebuka,

Great question! Choosing a career is a significant decision because it shapes your future, impacts your daily life, and influences your personal satisfaction and well-being. Here are some reasons why it's important to choose a career path thoughtfully:

1. Personal Fulfillment: When you find a career that aligns with your interests and passions, work becomes more enjoyable, leading to greater satisfaction in your daily life.

2. Financial Stability: A good career provides a stable income, which supports your lifestyle, helps you achieve your goals, and ensures long-term security.

3. Growth and Development: A fulfilling career offers opportunities to grow, develop new skills, and face challenges that help you evolve both professionally and personally.

4. Impact on Others: Many careers allow you to contribute positively to society, helping others and making a difference, which can be a rewarding aspect of your life.

5. Work-Life Balance: Choosing a career that aligns with your values and priorities can help you find a balance between work and personal life, reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

Using a career finder tool or exploring various career paths can help you identify careers that match your skills, interests, and values. This approach allows you to make a more informed choice about what would best suit your goals and bring you satisfaction over the long term.

Best wishes!
